Hi all, me again! Wink
Quick question, what tools, if any, are required for locking the camshaft/crankshaft on the above motor when doing the timing belt? Last belt I did was on my TDI Passat and it only requires a pin for the diesel pump and a locking bar for the camshaft-nice and simple (and a cheap kit). The belst isn't due to be done for ages but I'd like to have an idea what I'll need when I do go to do it. The Passat was always a bitch cos the whole front bumper has to come off and the front crossmember moved forward to just get in at the cam belt cover! I believe the megane, like the 19, just means takin off the driver's side front wheel to gain access, is this right? Is there a self tensioning roller on this car or does it require a tensioning tool?

Cheers all!

(I'm waiting for Halfords to get the Haynes in for me, but I'm curious now Laughing )

You dont really need any special tools, the timming belt on a 1.4e is quite easy

Thanks for that, very helpful. The system seems to be calling for a tension tool (which looks suspiciously similar to the one I have for my Passat!) but I reckon a circlip pliers will do just fine in any case, but what about that tension gauge they're on about? Can you tell just by feel when doing it? The VW's have two marks on the tensioner roller that must be lined up before torqueing the nut tight, any such markings on Renault tensioners or is it just done by 'feel' without the tension gauge?

usually you can set the tension by twisting the cambelt almost to 90' then make sure the tensioner is fully tightened up

Circlip pliers is what I used in the end.

Thanks lads, that's great to know I don't need to buy more tools to look after a car I don't even own! Laughing

Whats the best way to lock the engine in place on this engine? Is there a renault tool thats slots through the top of the gearbox bell housing to stop the flywheel moving?

From reading the Haynes you just select a high gear and that's it(same as my TDI Passat). There's a mark on the cam belt cover which you use to mark the block, this lines up with a mark on the crankshat pulley (no need to go looking at TDC marks on the flywheel through the gearbox bellhousing-handy). The cam has a mark on it's pulley and a mark on the head. I believe the belts have marks on two of the troughs between the teeth at opposite ends of the belt to show you which exactly what teeth go where on the two pulleys. It seems even easier than my 8V SOHC passat diesel (as there's no fuel pump to time!) to do to be honest. Great little engine by the looks of it.
