OK as promised a pic of the two mounts I can see from the engine bay - the front RH one looks like it has a lot of room between the vertical part of the mount and the ridge at the front of the mount's base, which you can kinda see from the pic.

box mount is fine the drivers side is knackered.

If you look at the drivers mount from the side through the wheel arch it will look collapsed.

If you get a rebuild kit then you will get all you need to do the job.

The base gasket though is ren specific and you need to get it from ren if it breaks whch they usualy don't, its cheap though.

Oil is oil from the engine breather.

Ahhh thanks for the info Chris - I thought the RH mount looked knackered. Got a shop in mind for the mount rebuild kit? GSF have an item R10108 described as ENGINE MOUNTING-FRONT RH with 'fitment' as R19 (V SHAPED) on the website, which sounds like the right thing, but I'm not sure if this includes everthing I would need.

If its the engine breather thats leaking a bit of oil, is it worth trying to fix and what do I need to repair/replace in order to fix it? I'm not actually sure its even leaking anymore, but if it is its only a very little as the engine oil isn't dropping noticeably.

On another carb related issue - I noticed today that there is a pipe from the carb that appears to go nowhere. It looks like it might be supposed to have something attached to its open end. Its best explained with the following pictures:

The pipe goes from the carb as shown in the second picture across the water pipes from the expansion tank, then down into the well behind the LH corner of the front bumper as in the first pic. Is it some kind of anti-percolation system? I couldn't find any info on it in Haynes or Dialogys, so I'm a bit curious!

yes that is what you want its 12/13 quid or something. you need to re-use the nust and the plate underneath. Easy job, 10 mins on these cars.

Clean the breathers out, some engine breathe heavily and chuck oil in within 1 k miles others are fine for 10k.

That pipe is the float bowl vent pipe. That goes where its supposed to, theres meant to be a clip which attache sit to a water pipe but these break off.

Its there to vent any fumes away from the passenger compartment and thast also what provides atmospheric pressure to enable the carb to work.

Thanks for the info - I take it the 'splat stain' underneath the exit of the float bowl vent pipe on the metalwork is fuel crap then?

I still haven't been able to find any tool that will let me sensibly adjust the carb mixture screw, other than my fingers, which is a bit tricky as I can't tell when the screw is actually turning and when my fingers are slipping. Got the fuel consumption up to 37mpg urban since I adjusted it leaner, but as I said it seems a bit limp now so I don't think its quite rich enough. I will hopefully get some time in a mates garage to do various things to the car including a thorough carb clean and the mount change in the next couple of months, but either way I need a tool to adjust the carb - if not now, then after the carb clean. I bought the stubbiest screwdriver I could find which is pretty much dead on 3.5" (about 8.5cm I think) long in total, and thats still too big Sad Someone must have a part number (and supplier) of a driver (or some other tool) that will do the job - I can't believe you all do it with yer fingers Very Happy

Oh one more thing - the plate under the front mount is rusty as hell, as is the subframe, so I'm gonna need some rust eating stuff before I paint over it to seal it all up. Any recommendations? I heard that some stuff called Blue Lightning is good, but I can't get hold of it anywhere near me, so I'd be grateful for other suggestions.

yes the stians vented crap from the float chamber. It always looks kinda oily.

I just use a normal stubby to do the mixture, make sure your rear engine mount ain't collapsed.

Ah ok - I'll try and check the mount, as I literally have about 2" or so coming straight out of the mixture screw before I hit the bulkhead. Is your stubby driver about 3.5" long too?
BTW Where's the best place to view the rear mount from? Can you see it from the engine bay, or is it only visible from underneath? Since the front mount is knackered I guess its likely the rear one will be too Sad especially given my luck!
