can anyone help? my 19 16v doesn't idle properly, when you start it, it idles as it should but after about 15 secs it starts varying the idle speed. if you drive it it is sometimes fine, but if you come up to a junction and drop the clutch, the idle speed can drop like a stone and stall the engine. im sure im not the only one who has experienced this, so any ideas? i have already changed the idle speed control valve to no effect, and renault dealer was total dog poo, charged me an hours labour, did what i had already done, and said they would need it for longer!!! any help would be gratefully recieved

is it a ph1? Does it have the trip comp?

Does the idle surge?

yep, phase 1, yep, trip comp, and it surges between 500 and 2000-2500 up and down like a yo-yo

or sometimes just stays high, like 1500, antil you flick the accelerator, and it will either stay high, or drop, then yo-yo again, doing my head in

righty i assume the trip comp works fine then. it reads the correct speed?

Change the coolanrt temp sender and the lambda will be causing the surging, take it for a thrash but if its a mega miler it may need replaced.

as i am rebuilding this car from top to bottom i shall change them, the car has done 91k at present, and yes the comp works fine, albeit leaaking on the display, when i have the engine in bits, what else should i change? my old man reckons the hydraulic tappets should be fine, but if it is all in bits, maybe i should change them?

the tappets can be refurbed as per ther article in the Knowledge base, you need to donate a tenner to see it though.

get a belt kit, maybe water pump, rear core plugs as well.

not really, trouble is poor ownership of the cars, pop the plug out and the pump off to blast the water gallery through anyway.
