On a P1 chammy, under the boot carpet after you take off the rubber cover, is that the fuel sender or fuel pump?

I can see another unit to the left which obviously is the other, but I am guessing I have to remove the tank to get at it?

When removing the tank, are there any tips/suggestions on how to do it? Haynes says empty the fuel tank first. So what? Am I meant to drive up and down my driveway until I run out of fuel?

Cheers for any help

Sender

You’ll struggle to get the tank off without snapping nuts off.

Go for a drive, wait till she’s been under the gallon mark for a bit then leave her to idle to death. Crank a few times to get petrol out lines. Even though the car won’t start/catch there will still be fuel in the lines so watch when you are taking them off, and don’t do it with a cigarette in your mouth!

with the petrol light on in my old hatch the thing weas running for over an hour at both idle and being revved up and down. Even then it wasn't empty.

Anyway 4 13mm bolts hold the tank on. I would spray the bolts and the captive nuts with plenty of wd-40 and leave iot for a few hours.

Then stick the 13mm socket on the socket and belt it with a hammer. Shoudl unbolt then.

Or cut the boot floor.

Bit drastic no?

Another question how many fuel pipes enter/leave the tank?

Obviously a supply and a return but are there any others?

Also what route does the fuel take? From tank through sender to pump to filter down car to fuel rail and back again?

You have the filler neck, supply pipe, return.

Petrol Pump - Into tank - through filter on fuel tank pump - fuel filter - injector rail - return feed

If you took it to a garage etc they would just get the jigsaw ont he boot floor.

Same if your replacing inboard brake pads on jags, chop a big hole inthe boot and stick it back on with self tapers and mastic.

You have the return and feed pipes from the pump. You have 2 breathers from the sender.

Sender stands alone.

Fuel pump is in the tank, fuel goes up through this out the top down to the fule filter onto the engine, return come back from the engine and back on the fuel pump cap and pumps runs down the fuel pump support leg.

There is a 3 pipe that runs beside the fuel line to the engine, thats a breather pipe for the charcoal canister.

lol its not hard Alex. See the metal ring with tags on it at the top holding the sender and pump in? It has tags which you hit round with a hammer till the slots line up and then lift it out.
