Hey up, I fitted the 285mm brakes to one side today but up on testing it looks to be binding? The pads seem to be always touching and they started smoking after a short run.

What could be wrong? The were all freed up at a garage so doubt they are siezed!

thanks,

Are the sliders well greased and free to move? Did the wheel spin by hand before and after the brakes were applied?

Did you have the calipers reconditioned or just "freed" - ie did they just poke them about until they worked, or did they take them appart and replace the piston seals etc? You have to remember these calipers are 15 years / 100k old they arn't going to keep working forever without a proper refurb.

If you only fitted them to one side there could be an issue of bias and travel, although I could be wrong.

258mm + brand new calipers from GSF would have been the way forward with regard to braking efficency.

Hi, they took out all the slider pins, pistons and copper greased them all up.

The sliders were moving ok. Looked fine.

Someone says that this is normal until the pads are bedded in?

thanks.

that side was bled yeah.

The piston was moving right when the pedal was pressed. Even when we put it all together I couldn't spin the disk it seemed too tight but it went together perfectly.

How easily should the slider move? It takes a bit of force but why would it resist? The slider bolts have been filled with copper grease! Does it just need 'using' a bit?

Looks the part btw Neal Wink I'm short of 4 bolts for the otherside though because each side requires 4 bolts from the R21T, 2 for the bracket and 2 for the caliper. Where would be the fastest place to get these? I bet Renault will take the piss!

Put the other side on before trying to troubleshoot.

They're just ISO fine M12 bolts, get em from your local fasteners factor.

I've found that the original carrier - hub bolts are too short anyway when you bolt the brackets onto the 19 hubs. Well, you can get a few threads in, but not enough for comfort.

Looks like it's on right going by that picture. What did the other side go on like?

Obvious remedy is just pack the bracket away from the hub with some washers...

yep Neal that's what i'm thinking. Not done the otherside yet until I sort this out. Also do you know what the thread type is on the M12 bolt? the bloke said 1.25mm or 1mm or something?

can you not take the bolts from the side you have seeing as you need to take it apart to fit thew washers. do these fit behind the standard 15" wheels.

copper grease is not for lubrication.

a grease that is for lubrication, copper grease is an anti-sieze compound.

Eitherway the slider bolts are prone to siezing, so copper grease seemed right to me, copper grease isn't exactly anti-lubrication is it? :p

Before:

Before

Done one side anyway, 1 washer on each side was all that was needed to space the bracker from the hub. Perfect. Now all I have to worry about is getting some bolts for the other side as I can't seem to locate any. Apart from renault but they are £50 Rolling Eyes . Also what can you use for to cover the slider pins up as one of the rubbers has a split in it, does anyone sell universal ones as I don't want shit to get in it.

have you tried the local scrappies, you can get them for free. have you tried asking a local garage where they get spare bolts from they must have some where for when they lose/break bolts

Tried them yesterday, only had M12x1.5 i need 1.25.

The don't really have many old renaults in the scrapies, so the bolts are all too long (would take over 6 washer on each bolt to make it fit) I'm not giving up though.
