Hi,

I have a '93 Clio Diesel thats failed its MOT due to having non-functioning power steering. I'd like to check the whole system over, but sadly the Haynes Manual I have has no real info on the operation or layout of the PAS on this car, let alone a decent wiring diagram with which to fault-find on it. Can anyone here help with a wiring diagram at all?

Cheers,

a 93 diesel clio should have a proper pump instead of the electric one.

Thats what I thought! Sadly, a quick look under the bonnet tells all. Theres an Electric powered hydraulic pump mounted to the rear right side of the engine, and a bunch of control relays mounted on the front of the N/S suspension turret.

According to the Haynes Manual (3031 - Renault Clio Diesel - 1991 to June 1996 - H to N reg.), ALL Diesel Clios of this period were fitted with electric pumps due to a lack of space in which to fit a mechanically driven pump. Sadly, they fail to back this up with any decent info, other than a quick summary of how to remove the pump...

well first thing is there fluid in it? Then are the relays clicking? pull each out and check for corrosion.

Good questions all:

Yes theres plenty of fluid in there, I'm not that daft! The fluid supply leads me to suspect the electrical side of things. Listening to relays clicking is non starter, simply because the steering system is only active when the engine is running, and its a bit noisy under there!

I can fault find the hard way of course, chasing wires and finding out where they go, pulling the pump out and running it on the bench etc. but it'd be a damn site easier and quicker if I knew how all the parts were connected together in the first place.

pull the relays and check for corrosion and burnt contacts. check the board they sit on as well. Also chack fuses!

I've got an electric pump on my 19
Also had one on a Clio Baccara, but they never went wrong.
May be the brushes in the motor.
Check all the fuses as the relays may well be fed from a a strange sorce. Renault add on.

Ok, I've checked the relays, and there doesn't seem to be a problem there, everythings clicking and whirring as it should. The problem is that I dont know what the function of each of these relays actuallly is, or what switches them in and out. Somewhere in the control circuit is an oil pressure switch, that is used to prevent the pump running unless the engine is running too, what I dont know where it is pysically on the block, or how it fits into the relay logic that runs the Power Steering.

The next step is to get a wiring diagram, work out what cable goes where and energise the pump directly, or strip out the battery, fuel filter, and pump unit to bench test it. A job I dont relish doing, and would rather not do unless absolutley nessesary. So, if anyone out there has a wiring diagram tha could help me, please-please let me know... It would really be much appreciated, and the results would probably go on to make a decent fault finding guide for the future. I cant be the only person to have suffered this failure?

I still have a Haynes for the Clio, but as you say nothing about the wiring, Used to have a French Manuel but I gave it to the people I sold a Clio 1.4 automatic to, who are still friends so I’ll try to borrow it back.

Before you get the pump out try to connect a wire to the terminal on the pump and touch it to +12v. The pump should run. Work your way back though the relays checking continuity on the wiring.

If the pump is a non-runner it my well be the electric brushes inside the DC motor. You will find it hard to find the right size brushes but slightly bigger ones can be filed down.

Renault will sell the pump only not parts for it. Some places may do exchange stardard on them but not cheap.
