How easy is it to change the lower suspension arm ball joint on the R19 1.4? According to Dialogys it's a case of dropping the anti roll bar and suspension arm, loosening a few bolts, attaching the new ball joint and then tightening everything up.

Yet anytime I've heard of people changing ball joints on other cars there's been mention of sledge hammers, ball joint extractors and hydraulic presses to remove and replace ball joints.

Is the 19 different?

you should not have to touch the ARB if its just the ball joint ur doing.

take off roadwheel, undo clamp bolt on the stub axle carrier, undo the other 2 bolts holding it to the wishbone and with any luck it will come off and you can put your new one on.

But as with anything thats been on your car for many many years, easier said than done, cold chisel is a useful tool to help widen the gap in the stub axle carrier to get the damn balljoint out, i tried with a balljoint tool on mine and that was useless, used a cold chisel in the end and eventully it came out.
dont loose the plastic protector plate which comes out with it as u need to reuse that.
note which way the clamp bolt went in as well, this needs to go back in the same way and when ur putting it all back together dont fully tighten the bolts on the wishbone until you have the car back on its wheels.

Interestingly enough, when I changed the ball joing on the TD, it came with a new plastic protector, yet the 16v ball joint was more expensive and didn't come with one...

when you get a new balljoint, go to a motor factor for it, should be under a tenner then. You will get 3 new bolts.

Jack it up remove the pinch bolt on the hub, use a cold chisel in the split to open it up, the balljoint should now come out of the hub.

Remove the bolts holding it to the wishbone, if your lucky they'll just snap, saves time undoing them see.

Then just stick the new one on.

Dialogies is pretty useless when fixing cars as very often the info is plain wrong.
