Like I said in the other post dom, I just replace the hub. £20 a time and a 20 min job with the right tools - Taking a risk with a second hand hub but your also taking a risk banging a new bearing in.

I had a bearing go on my clio 1.4RT about 1500 miles after a new one had just been fitted. Quite a few people suggested that the bearing carrier (I think that's what it was called) would be the problem and I was told that the only way to sort it would be to put a new hub on. I just went to the scrappies and got one for about £15, got a new bearing put in it and it's been fine since then (about 4000 miles).

I don't know if it's necessary to replace the hub, but for all it costs I think it's probably worth it as the bearing shouldn't really go too quickly.

Stupid? Righty ho.

Bearing £20
Finding garage that will press it in for you / Paying the garage £20 and phone calls or driving.
Taking the hub off
Getting down to the place as your car only has three wheels
Dropping the bearing off
Waiting around for it to be done
Refitting

Or

Pick up a hub for £20 from the scrappies
Removal of old hub, refitting of new

Half the price, no where near as much hassle.

Yes I see your point very stupid Rolling Eyes

So going to the scrappies and pulling a hub off another car is less effort than buying a new bearing and taking your hub to a garage (by bus, lift, bike, or heaven forbid - by FOOT!) ?

Add to that fact that you could be paying £20 at the scrappies for a bearing that is already dead or on its way out. When it goes, you have to go through your whole sorry rigamarole again.

So yes, stupid.

an old hub with new bearing is ok donsrno. The carriers tend to be fine its the hubs which wear.

but buying an old who knows how many miles its done and what state its in hub then fitting that is just stupid.

I deal with hubs a lot, some of them I can't even turn by hand and I'm relatively big chap, others freewheel. You only knwo this when you get them off the car though.

So in theory if you wanted to pick a good un you could spend hours sifting through removing dodgy hubs, till you got a good un.
