the new twin turbo 535 diesel bimmer looks to be a machine.

272bhp and a feck load of torque.

1750kg's 0-60 in 5.8s and 0-100 in 14.6s

Thats some serious performance from an oil burner.

aye the VAG diesels are very good, easy to extract power from.

Might be a beema but its nice, nice engine, quick plus you can sit in the outside lane all the time, never use indicators and knock others cars from the road cos a bmw means you now own the road

Yeah a Skoda dealership is advertising the Fabia vRS 1.9 TDi 130bhp in the local Auto Trader;

"More torque than a Porsche Boxster. A higher top speed than a Lotus Elise 1.8. 0-60mph quicker than an Alfa 166 2.0 litre Twin Spark. And wait for it....It's a diesel!"

I'd say in recent years most car manufacturers have spent enormous amounts of money and time researching the Diesel engine. I think it has now reached a point where there is not much more to gain, one of the few things left is the pollution aspect (particles).

so imho they should start looking at the petrol engine again, I'm sure there are also a lot of development opportunities.

as you'll probably have guessed, I'm not too much of a Diesel friend. I was converted this summer though, when I had a rental Audi A4 Avant 2.5 V6 TDI for a weekend at the Baltic Sea. that thing seriously shifted, there aren't many cars that will overtake you on the Autobahn Smile it also reached an indicated 245 kph and such full-throttle journeys rarely made it drink more than 10 or 11 liters per 100km.
but it's not spectacular, 6-speed gearbox almost isn't needed because of the huge amount of torque. you can drive very relaxed most of the time, knowing that it will jump forward by a mere blip of the go-go pedal.
that's one thing you really miss when getting back into the 19.

also a mate has got the new 1series bimmer, 120d to be exact. it's nothing fascinating, but a nice little everyday car. the 2.0 bmw diesel is very rough though, you can hear the car earlier than you can see it.

as for the 535d, everybody acts as if (different sized) twin-turbos were something new, when the Supra had this way back in the early 90s....
"sport auto" compared th 535d to the 540i iirc, and the diesel won hands down. have to dig the issue out for more details.

I'm getting a rental VW Touran TDI tomorrow because my sister is moving flats. so a 1200km Autobahn roundtrip is on order...
