When you say "phase 2 engine" I assume you mean "phase 2 gearbox"

yes, they are the same.

Early phase 1s had a shitty tin sump setup. You can still use this with the phase 2 gearbox but there will be a gap with the flywheel showing. So you just put the alloy sump on if you're bothered.

Thats wrong. Its the box that causes the gap, not the sump

Whats worse was the fact you had taken pics of a tin sump lump that very day!

yeah well a tin sump engine with an ally sump box will also leave a hole with the bottom section of the flywheel showing, will it not?

How is it not to do with the gearbox?

The original question concerned a tin sump engine + ally sump box.

So ner.

dont run a tin sumped F7P with an ally sumped box, as you will screw up the gearbox and flywheel! as you can only bolt the box up round the top, under the weight and stresses of torque the box loosens away from the engine. this screwed up the starter ring gear and the gear box bearings.

If I was going to do that, I would make up some kind of block-gearbox brace, similar to the one normally used with the tin sump
