set it to TDC.

And set the value for lift on overlap.

but the figure they provide comes from their research as to wot (I mean what really) gives best performance. if u've had cams re-profiled 2 ur own spec its a case of DIY.

If you have your cam profile ground for yourself, then you will have max lift at 'x' degrees, so for this reason, at TDC there will also be an 'x' value for lift.

The cam grinder should be able to tell you what that is from his software, or indeed the software you use to design the profile.

And the cam manufacturer has their lift@TDC value which is also relative to their max lift@ 'x' degrees timing. So from this you cna set it up and advance or retard your cams as you see fit for your application.

I run my timings failry different to the reccomended, especially the kent timings. But with lft @ TDC we are talking steps of 0.01-0.1mm.

how will the grinder know the lift @TDC figure, if they havnt experienced a certain cam/s? besides, how does the figure given by kent/piper/etc relate to the powerband i.e. is it for max peak power, best "overall" delivery, best mid-range torque.....get wot (I mean what really) im sayin?! different levels of overlap give different power-bands....

so - wot (I mean what really) im trying to get at is u either use one or the other of these lift values at a set crank angle i.e. either TDC or Xdeg ATDC. if ur not given either, it seems logical to set inlet @ around 100deg ATDC, and work from there. the reason i cant give a reference point for lift @TDC is cos this value relies on overlap, whereas @ around 100deg ATDC is gonna be max flow thru head

OK, i think i'm loosing you a bit.

If you've designed a cam you obviously have an inlcing of where your wanting peak lift to occur relative to crank degrees right. If you dont how the hell did you design the cam without considering it.

Second, can you really be arsed to design a cam then make about 20 power pulls just to test the different timing positions....no.

SO, if you designed a cam, especially on computer like the grinder will have to convert to or you would supply him with, you simply have to rock the virtual engine to TDC and check your lift on overlap.

From that point you can advance or retard....no shit that different overlap values give diffenrent engine traits......so i dont really get what your saying no. lol
