 Central Locking knackered?

Hi,
I have a '98 Renault Megane Classic RT. About 5 weeks ago, the alarm died, so my local mechanic disconnected it, but left the remote control central locking and immobiliser working as normal. It's been working fine since then, until today...

When I went to unlock it, the plip wouldn't work. I tried the spare one. It wouldn't work either, so I unlocked the driver's door using the key, the old-fashioned way. I noticed that the other doors stayed locked when I did this. I put the key in the ignition, expecting to see the red immobiliser light flashing, but instead, the yellow "electronic incident" light at the right hand side of the dash was flashing. I also noticed that the central locking button on the dash wasn't working.

I've checked that the batteries are OK in both keys by pointing them at my webcam and seeing them light up, so I'm guessing I have a problem with the car's central locking electrics.

Any advice on what it's likely to be before I speak to my local friendly mechanic? Is removing the central locking fuse to check it likely to cause any problems with the security system? (eg. resetting it and needing me to extract the security code from my local not-so-friendly Renault dealer for entry once the central locking's working again)

Cheers, and hello! It's my first post here.

Sounds strange i would say probably a fuse or some loose/damaged wiring. You could try and disconnect the battery terminal and reconnecting it after a while and see what happens??

yep prolly fuse gone or the relay, not too sure about the megane but on some of the 19's the same fuse was used for the central locking and the factory fitted alarm key switch, but you said the factory alarm has been disconnected anyway.
the factory immobliser is on the ECU on the 19's and again not sure on the meganes but i say you are pretty safe to remove the fuse to check it

The Megane's are imobilised at the ECU and the Fuseboxes IIRC and the key fob tells them both to disarm when the button is pressed and the cycling code is accepted by the IR receiver which in turn opens the doors. It sounds to me like there is a problem with the fusebox as I believe it also controls the central locking and replaced the seperate central locking relay as found in the 19's. This being the case, i'd start to panic about price because I also believe that the fuse boxes are vehicle specific and a random one from a scrap yard will not do the job without a trip to your local main dealer to have them sync'd. Have you tried plugging the alarm back in to see if this cures your problem?

Chet or Chris should be able to say for sure though but I'm pretty certain the fuseboxes are vehicle specific.

I'd have a look to make sure the receiver isn't swimming in water first tbh
