Back in July 2005 Alan (meddy clio) had a clio RT. It wasn't to healthy engine wise and he wanted more. He came to me as he knew it would be a top notch job.

The job was basically port the head and make it faster.

A job to which I welcomed.

The car was dropped off and Alan who is in the RAF serving his nation was shipped off to somehwere hot and sweaty to fix aeroplanes.

I was then to sort the beast.

Heres the first pic I took of the car, the engine bay I could tell right away the headgasket was blown

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20bay%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

there was a few other things that needed done as well, I have a good eye for things like this.

The bonnet he had complained about, it didn't latch properly, a quick look at the catch revealed this

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20bonnet%20catch%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

a quick bit of this and that had it straightened out

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20bonnet%20catch%2002.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

heres a pic of the side of the car, as you can see there had been a lot of cash spent on the car

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20side%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

Inside I noticed a missing bit of trim, the tailgate hinge cover

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20hinge%20cover%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

I noticed the tailgate was out of alignment and the tailgate loom wasn;t secured correctly.

The loom first

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20hatch%20loom%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

secured as it should be

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20hatch%20loom%2002.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

the tailgate, as you can see the tailgate was missaligned, this would have caused leaks and extra wind noise

[img:531:709:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20tailgate%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

this is how it was

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20tailgate%2002.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

and after I aligned it properly

[img:531:709:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20tailgate%2003.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

to complete that job a replacement cover for the hinge nut

[img:531:709:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20hinge%20cover%2002.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

As I said earlier the headgasket had gone, heres some proof of it

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20coolant%20cap%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

and the header tank

[img:531:709:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20clio%20header%20tank%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

Further looking around revealed a burst vacuum hose, won't help the car at all

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20burst%20vac%20hose.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

The inductiuon kit was a Hillpower effort, a dirty one no less

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20IK%2001.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

[img:531:709:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20IK%2002.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20IK%2003.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

Alan also wanted a top mount cover, the ph3's never came with these but the customer gets what the customer wants

[img:709:531:09bba6d8aa]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20top%20engine%20mount%2002.jpg[/img:09bba6d8aa]

It was then time for the real work to commence...

So it was time to pull the head off. An easy job done quickly, another day at the office really.

[img:709:531:0312aa89e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20head%20removal%2005.jpg[/img:0312aa89e3]

On the head side, straight away exhaust manifold to downpipe gasket, damaged, needed replaced

[img:709:531:0312aa89e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20downpipe%20gasket%2001.jpg[/img:0312aa89e3]

gasket stuck to the head and heres a pic of the head

Time to look at the headgasket, not to clever looking

[img:531:709:0312aa89e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20hg%2001.jpg[/img:0312aa89e3]

also noticed the coolant pipe that runs behind the exhaust manifold was a bit bent

[img:531:709:0312aa89e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20metal%20coolant%20pipe%2001.jpg[/img:0312aa89e3]

exhaust manifold removed before taken inside to clean

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20head%20exh%20manifold%20off.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

the head was then stripped and cleaned, this was before it was cleaned

[img:709:531:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/ph3%20rt%20head%2001.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

note the late read poor ph3 twisted port head

[img:709:531:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/ph3%20rt%20head%2002.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

terrible port design

[img:709:531:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/ph3%20rt%20head%2005.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

not the best design but it could be improved upon.

Now sadly I didn't get any pics of the port work, but as Alan will tell yuo he could feel the difference right away and it was later dyno proven. I do however have some other pics of the head build

here is the head face half cleaned up

[img:567:216:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20head%20face%2001.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

and nearly done

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20head%20face%2002.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

heres the valves, one on the left before cleaning and the one on the right cleaned valves

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20valves%2001.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

this was after the head was cleaned up, chambers cleaned as was head face

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20chamber%2001.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

inlet manifold porting

before clean up and porting

starting to port

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20inlet%20man%2002.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

the black ring shows the missmatch, a small step is good for anti reversion but this is excessive

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20inlet%20man%2003.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

getting there, yopu need to go as far back as possible not big changes in the easily accessible inch or so!

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/meddy%20inlet%20man%2004.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

the car never had a charcoal canister, the car had a bump before I got it and this was left off, the stubs were still in the pipes

[img:567:425:59eef3339f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/meddy%20clios%20clio/Meddy%20char%20can%2001.jpg[/img:59eef3339f]

The car of course started first turn of the key. It was a lot bette rbut not quite right.

I had another TB from an earlier clio as I reckoned this was the problem

as ou can see they were different

so I just swapped the injector

So the car was running right but theres a coupel of things left.

The boot rattled on bumps. The rear wiper had been removed so the power cable had been left rattling inside the tailgate

cheap and effective repair to that problem

the dog bone mount also required replacing

this sorted out the gearchange and made the car much smoother.

It was then collected and some time later it was on the rolling road. It put out 86bhp which is a 13bhp gain over the standard ph3 output.

If there had been a ph1 straight port head sourced it would have been even more power.
