right my plip mysteriously packed up a while ago and due to having a leaky sunroof (which is now fixed) i put it down to that frying the board above.
I have got another complete unit and plip key which are a pair.
all the key does when you press it is flash and doesnt stay solid like the one from the car originally did.

i'm presuming it needs re-coding?

now here is my other problem as mine seems to be a weird one as its one of the first PH 2's out (l plate) but it doesnt have an immobiliser, just an OE alarm so i can still drive the car and open the car via the lock.
there is nothing in the glovebox like some have and nothing on the end of the wiper stalk. there is no decoder under the scuttle panel and there isnt one behind the passenger or drivers side front speaker.
is there anywhere else they put the decoder as i'm stumped as to where it could be.

its not in the engine bay either as i've had the engine out (twice) and nothing is in there, unless its some way part of the loom as the original loom has never changed

the red led on the key won;t stay on for more than a second on most of the plips, its rare to find one that stays on solid.

The output from the key is only a millisecond.

It doesn't need recoding. If you have a matching pair and its not an immobiliser one then theres a problem most likely with the key. Have you checked the key for an output?

use a digital camera to look at the emitter thing on the key while you press the button.

is it always working?

Should be blue for a split second every time the key is pressed. I find a lot need to be soldered.

what does the reciver look like? The board shoudl be brown with loads of bit son it, if its green and is pretty bare lookign yo uneed to get an older style plip and key.

the actual unit with the motion sensors in is exactly the same but the IR reciever is different, the old one was brown and the new one is green and i'm presuming that if its that, thats fucked i cant just swap them just as i couldnt take my TV remote next door and change their telly channel (unless its sky lol)

green means its plipped through the ECU so you need to get another receiver and key to get it working. the old brown un.

right, although on inspection of the actual IR unit there seems to be no water damage to the connections only the motion sensor board, and on the older key it looks like the signal is much weaker via the key with the same new batter, i'm wondering if soldering the old key will get it working again with the brown receiver

it shoudl do.

Also the old key may have a worn contact pad on the battery, you will see what I mean whn you open it.
