i have been reading about clutches and how they work on www.howstuffworks.com good source of knowledge really and i have a quite fair idea on how clutch basicly works ,what actually happens when you press the clutch pedal etc.. but i still cant figure out a few things in practical life .

1-what is meant by slipping the clutch ,how actually is it done ??

2-can a clutch work forever without being replaced if it can be used without slipping at all as slipping seems to be the only reason for the clutch to wear .

3-is r19 16v clutch the hardest of all to replace as they have an aluminium sump so that the engine has to be removed with the gearbox ?

4- what other cars have the same sort of (hard to replace ) clutch ??

You dont have to remove the engine on a 19 16v to replace the clutch.

Righty firstly a clutch is basically like a brake disc and pads.

When you press the brakes do the wheels lock up? No thats cos the brakes are slipping.

Clutch is the same.

If you look at projectY you see the clutch etc, when you get muppets who rest their foot on the clutch pedal this causes the clutch to slip thus damaging it and wearing the cover

this pic is of the cover from project Y. The clutch was newish, maybe done 2 or so k miles before it went bang, anyway look at the pic of the cover, thats someone resting their foot on the pedal causing the wear on the diagphram springs

2. yes but if there was no need for slip there would be no need for a clutch.

3. No, just as easy as say a 1.4. The ally sump isn't fitted to all of them and the engine doesn't need to be removed to change it.

4. I could name a million and be here all night. But you have very strange set ups, old golfs that BL bought the boxes from used an inside out clutch.

a year ago i have been quoted for a new clutch on a m reg fiesta 1.3 for 135 quid in a garage
what would be the rough price to have a valver cluth fitted in the same garage ?

fair enough , i take it ,its much more fiddly than fitting a poxy fiesta''s clutch i believe?

my local did it for 150 which was nice, but i did supply the clutch which is about 65.

but these days i wud do it myself and save 150 as well.
