you can leave the engine in and just remove the box.

My girlfriend has a 2L 16V 1995 Megane, how easy is the clutch replacement on this? Does it require the whole engine to be removed?

its easier to whip out the whole lump

this is more awkward in an AC equiped car as most of the 2l 16V's seem to be.

It can be done if you lever tyhe back of the subframe down after removing the bolt.
