just been on the phone to the friendly local garage ,was not as bad as i thought . i have been quoted £145 + vat for a new clutch fitted .

i suppose they will fit the cheapest clutch they will find in the motor factors ,now i am wondering if the make of the clutch makes a difference with the performance and life time .

if it does matter , i am planning to buy a good one from somewhere else and ask them to fit that one .
gsf has a clutch for the 1.8 8v for £46 but i dont know if thats any good

170 quid for a clutch change on a 19? They obviously have never done one before. And you won't be getting new box oil or anything, they will probably just shove the box aside and do it.

Valeo are oe and some would argue the best.

However from GSF the LUK clutches are Valeo but LUK covers, so I get the LUK gear.

i wish i could do it myself really, its annoying to not to know what they are using or how good they are doing the job. Sad

i did not know they were meant to change the gearbox oil too , i was going to do it myself after the clutch change .

cheers for the info mate , will stick with the gsf clutch

well you don't need to.

When I change the clutch the box or both the box and engine come out, usually need to do other stuff at the same time anyway.

But I change the box oil, the clutch, cleaned down the box and flywheel change the gearchange bushes if req'd.

they dont HAVE to change the oil...if u dont ask em to they wont do it out of the kindness of their heart...they dont need to drain the box to do the clutch see.

save a bit of labour money and do it urself after as u said

i see , i will change the box oil myself .

i have a list of things to do for this car(engine oil,oil filter ,dizzy cap, rotor arm, rocker cover gasket ,plug leads and plugs all need to be changed sooner) ,just waiting for a chance to keep it off the road for a while . i dont think that will be possible before the summer though.

how much did it cost for your tensioner to get done? Was it a full kit (belt, idler and tensioner) or just the tensioner?

aye they did, you trust this garage? they shoudl have advised you to get eh full lot.

£20 labour wasn't bad though. But then again its a 19 so the covers easy to take off.

no i certainly dont trust any garage chris but i have no other choice when things need to be done .

by the way i cant seem to find a dizzy cap and a rotor arm set for 1.8 8v on gsf"s cataloque . its not the same as 16v one is it?

£20 labour is good indeed considering they had to get the belt out .
