Just outta interest, when the pedal fails, is it usually the plastic ratchet teeth that go or does the little tension spring loose the plot?

teeth.

Spring usually gives no trouble unless its caught in something or not located properly.

the ratchet fails without makign noise, sometimes it cracks/creaks others its quiet and you crunch the gears in.

pedals easy enough to change, should take about 20 mins or so.
