I've looked at Chris H's 'Gentle Ben' article, and am having the same free play problem. I've got lots of free play (and noise) from behind this boot / gaiter:
Any idea how to remove the gaiter? I've tried rolling back, pullingetc but no joy. Is this where the loose joint is?

er done it  ! Being over cautious seeing as I've broken stuff being heavy handed before.
Haynes seem to make a meal of getting it out...do you just undo this pinch bolt (can see why it took you forever, looks like a bastard):
...and then undo column bolts and swing the whole thing up and out? DO you need to mark the joint position or not?

just the column bolts then she's out... damn this winter darkness!
Prob gonna do the same as you Chris in fixing with shims...did you consider putting any rubber back into the joint (maybe alongside thinner shims) to stop it being so harsh on bumps and rough ground? Dont want it to end up being an effort to drive. |

it won't be an effort, it improves it no end. the racks still on rubebnr mounts.
The manual rack is solid bolted and has no rubbe rint eh column, its fine to live with as well. |
