ahhh the keyboard came from Maplins (hangs head in shame)

let me see, 4 case fans (3 cooling and 1 exhaust), 2 fans on the PSU, CPU Fan, Memory Fan, Chipset fan, GFX card fan making a total of 10 fans inside mine . . 550watt PSU powering it all.

all of that means my cpu sits at a nice 28 degrees C Smile

its not that noisy as it goes as i paid a bit extra for the fans and got the quiet ones.

i put windows 2k pro on this machine as i still prefer it over XP but run XP at work. (most viruses now are targeted at XP machines as of course its the latest version of windoze)

i run zonealarm for my firewall on the home machine and like you have disabled the XP firewall on my work PC cos its utter shite!
we have a hardware firewall at work and an email filter which gets 99% of spam and email spread viruses/trojans.

also at home i have NATS on my router, i've got a router because of the home network, share my flat with a mate at work so his pc is online too and my laptop which i use in my bedroom.
so far not had any virus or trojan problems, only thing i did have a prob with is a browser hijack, adaware picked it up but could not kill it off, tried several apps to kill it but all failed, ended up reinstalling windows.

Give it good cleaning about once a month. My house is very dust free for some reason . But then again I have no on the PC except the PSU (and the CPU and Graphics of course).

Deffo no to hairy people around

also at home i have NATS on my router, i've got a router because of the home network, share my flat with a mate at work so his pc is online too and my laptop which i use in my bedroom.

Is that not NTFS

Renault PCs must be cool
when you see how the ECU's run
if you can.
Good luck

yes Mals, i see you are being true to your word Razz

No R1916S, NTFS is a file structure used by Win XP and Win2K
Win 98 & Win 95 used the fat32 file structure.

Ok roger, i'll be on msn sometime tonight.

1. JB Why did you turn off Windows updates? that puts your PC more at risk. 2. WN, any virus's tragetted at XP are 99% likely to affect 2000 too!

Huw, your kinda correct, win xp and win 2k use the same file structure but a lot of the architecture is different so an exploit found on an XP machine prolly wont affect an win2k machine.
when XP was first released it got hit badly because a lot of win 2k viruses affected it, but as most companys upgrade to the newer systems the hackers and virus writers spend thier efforts on exploting those systems.

there are of course viruses like melissa, doombot and the i love you virus that affect both operating systems because of what they target, your email address book and registry.
they look in your registry to find software keys (xp activation, games keys etc) and then set themselves up as an email client to email not only the virus to all in your address book but also to send the stolen keys to several email addresses used by the hacker.

there are many many variants of the above, if u run antivirus keep it updated often.

NATS is hardware based R1916S, usually comes on a router or a switch and can take some setting up, you have to clear ports thru it to IP addresses on your local area network so for example if you use peer to peer for sharing files, you need to clear those ports it uses thru the NATS.
You can also set up filters or block web addresses/ip addresses and also block keywords (for a laugh i told mine to block any search with the word sex in it on my mates PC, was wondering how long it would take for him to say something was up and then i would say HAHAHA looking for pron are we? i disabled it after about 30 minutes when he noticed lol)

best bet for a single home PC IMO is a software firewall and i love one called zonealarm, the free version comes with regular updates, is easy to set up and allows u control of incoming and outgoing net traffic.

WN, they both use the NT architecture, they are virtually the SAME. Windows 2000 is version 5, XP is 5.1 its a minor upgrade to it. Worms like the sasser, blaster all exploited the lsass exploit which is common between 2k/XP. So an exploit for XP will more than likely affect 2000, just look at the microsoft fixes, they usually apply to XP/2000 and sometimes Server 2003.

Switches dont have NAT, switches only switch data, ie relay it, they dont modify it like a NAT'd router would do.

For the rest? hope-fully my router thing deals with the hackers.

Do'nt think I have anything worth hacking anyway.

Bl**dy computer's.

i turn off windows update cos my view is that if it aint broke dont fix it....and it works perfect for me.

windows updates r trying to fix EVERYBODIES problems worldwide and if u dont have a problem it is just more junk being installed on the machine for no purpose.
