Driving home in the early hours of this morning, my car developed a strange crunchy / grindy / rattly noise, mainly when pulling away at a round about or going round corners at lower speed.

First thought was CV joint.
I jacked the car, put it in gear and rocked the wheel back and forth. There was no play in the CV but theres quite a bit from what i assume to be the diff.
This was coupled with some nasty clunky rattly noises, didnt feel good.

Any ideas what could have happened here?

Is it new box time?

Cheers!

hmm, get under the car and see if you can move the drivers inner CV in and out, this will only work btw if theres a roll pin still in there.

If you can diff bearings are shot or the nut/circlip on the drivers side of the dif has gone.

Yep, there is a bit of movement there, not a lot, just a couple of mm.

I'll get the car up on the axle stands at the weekend and have a proper inspection.

If it turns out to be the nut/circlip, is this going to be easily fixable?

Diff bearings means new gearbox i take it?

Cheers!

new box easy method, if that clip/nut goes then the casings normally damaged.
