Hmm, I had that twice sometime ago, and it was the battery going both times. Could also be a loss of ground

Confused

bad earth makes the needle jump with electrical loads, may also find a broken wire somewhere.

as for the light thing, if it works when you wiggle it then you need a new stalk.

If the rev counter needle jumps when you tap the dash, you should check all the 3 plugs that go into the dash's rear. For that, yo'll have to remove it. Those plugs connect to a flexible plastic with copper contacts. Before looking for a bad earth and dismantle your car, try this:

1 - Unplug the 3 connectors
2 - Lift the contacts's plastic support
3 - Insert 1 round of wire tape around rigid plastic (white) support
4 - Reposition the flexible plastic with the contacts
5 - Check for broken or corroded contacts
6 - Before mounting the thing, connect the 3 plugs
7 - Start the car, tap the dash and check for those jumps
8 - If the problem disappears, mount definitely
9 - If not, then you'll have to look elsewhere. If the problem is the battery going, it should jump with the ignition on and the engine stopped
10 - Good luck

yes behind the side trims under the dash. When you unscrew them scrape the paint off the captive but so its clean metal.

blackman says no to taking dash out .blackman found it very fiddelly and also cut top of dash cushion on replacing the dash to fit new bulbs . blackman has also noticed when ignition turned on rev counter needle moves slightly.sometimes ignition turned on and it dont pulse the needle and it dont work at all. ie no pulse equals no rev counter.i have fitted 3 light switches this is the third one all s/h 10 pound each.they are the square handled ones and are getting hard to find now .blackman says 19 best car ever owned. coming up to 200/000 and still going strong. phase 1 rules.oh yeaaaaaaaa.

the needle should jump when the ignitions on as the ignition module sends a pulse back to the gauge thus the small jump.

As for it not always working its probably a poor connection at the dash display, they plastic strip can be easily damaged.
