ok then, some one suggested to me just to drop the subframe? would this any easier or is there more work?
what are the pros and cons of this method?

Its easier to do but in my opinion if you're planning on refitting the engine its a bit messier

Right, because im collectong a replacement engine next weekend, because my one packed up, i think i'll just borrow the engine hoist from work. hoist it out and put the new one in. is there anything i should change while the engine is out to make life easier on the long run? i.e steering rack bushes?
many thanks

new clutch would be a good idea, thoroughly inspect all the brake lines round the back of the bay, maybe jetwash the bay and subframe. Check/replace steering rack gaiters.

Obviously on the engine itself you can replace the cambelt if its time or nearly time, aux belt etc while its out, very easy.
