After splitting the engine and box I found that the reason why the clutch was slipping as not because it was worn, rather because it was covered in oil!

Having tracing the oil to the head I took it off and found that the gasket had deteriorated around one side.

In the next few days I hope to get a steel ruler and see if the head is warped, the manual says to use feeler blades to test it, I havn't done this before so should the ruller lie exactly flat on the head or is a little gap okay?

If the head needs skimmed what will this cost?

Can the valves be left in?

Will the manifolds and coolant housing etc have to come off?

Will it be a good long lasting job when it is finshed?

You will probably find the head will be ok, the gasket rots and leaks oil. The oil gets to it, oil leaks from the cam cover and dizzy eat away at the gasket and its not helped by bad coolant either.

You use the edge of the rule and check it, if you can see light under the rule but can't get say a 0.03mm feeler gauge in you should be ok.

When you refit the head and do it all up proeprly it chould crush just fine.

As for a skim, 20 quid. Valve can stay in, manifolds need to come off.

Job should last forever.
