Any chance of sending the parts abroad, say Portugal? Just emailed them but if anyone has the experience...

Dear Dan

I apologise if I did not make myself clear. Embarassed

I was wondering if Prima racing would send the parts abroad, but since you have those, what are the aplicable engines for the piper cams and what improvement (here I go again, Chris) can be expected? Shocked

TIA Smile

wouldn't let prima make me a sandwich never mind their engine parts. Also they are double the price of other places.

Jorge the cams are for 16v's.

270 is the duration.

Piper in the UK have scans for a cam for the E-type engines in their database, spec is:

240° Duration
Valve Lift of 319 Thou
317 Exhaust

Dunno if this is spec of the standard cam or a fast-road/race application though.

My ignorance:

Exactly what do those specs mean?

Well the purpose of a camshaft is to open the inlet and exhaust valves. There are two things in a camshaft you can alter to get more performance:

1 - Lift
2 - Duration

Lift is as it sounds, it describes how far the valves are opened

Duration is the time the valves are opened for and is expressed as degrees of rotation since the camshaft is a rotating part.

That's about as much as I know, folk like Chris, Stan and BenR will be able to fill you in with more info than I can!

So, if you change the duration and opening height of the valves to get more improvement, you must compensate the valves clearances and engine timing?

as a general rule on SOHC engines liek the E7J the cams are ground aroudn the stock timing marks.

On DOHC you have the joys of playing with lobe seperation thus lift on overlap and so on

Yes, but if you mess with the specs on a SOHC, should'n't you compensate the ECU/fuel pressure regulator spring/distributor/something else? Cool

the difference in camshaft profile isn't radical enough to requirte a remap. Its fine with the stock MAP, at worst there will be a slightly lumpy idle.

So, what should one look for when upgrading? High duration-short height, high duration-long height, low duration- short height or low duration-low height?

if your skint just get your old cams re ground and it won't cost you a fortune either. it will make the top end more ticky but what the hell it'll save you a bundle. try kent and piper
