You do not need any of these tools to do this

Image

You can get the top of by hand but it doesn’t help much.

After drilling a 3mm hole in the centre of the bottom measure 32mm down from the top and cut it off all around with a hacksaw.

Image

Get the guts out of the thing and drill out the hole in the bottom to 14mm.

Stuff it inside fit the bolt through the bottom torque it up to 70nm job done.

Cleaned up the surface rust a bit and slapped some under sealer on it but must get them off when I have more time. The rubber seal sits over the top. Put plenty of spray into the old damper before fitting.
Front feels much more precise in corners, need to go up to my test track. The original dampers had done 103 000Km so a bit tired. The epoxy paint or what ever they put on the springs had rust running around under it. Suface rust only but maybe springs and bushes next.

I don't understand why you never unscrewed the retaining cup?

doing that would have allowed you to secure the top of it in the strut.

Its not screwed in.
Bit dirty in the pic but its locked in by 4 or 5 bent over bits.
The yellow tube has 4 lumps sticking out. Thats why they tell you to cut it 32mm down. In fact I had to start the screw on the bottom without the washer at first. The lumps are forced in to the end of the tube by the screw pulling down.
The shocks are original Renault stamped Boge units and the guy at STAC (click on name for web page) said they have to be original
