 Flat-Plane Cranks

can some1 explain what a flat plane crank v8 is. i no its sumthing to do with a different firing order, but not quite sure. cheers

It means that each bigend is 180 degrees from each other, if you were to lay it on the table it would lie flat.

TVR's use it and i think the F360 might aswell

Chet that lovable Irish reprobate is indeed correct.

A flat plane crank has each throw 180 degrees.

normal V8's have the crank throws at 90 degrees to each other.

It basically turns a conventional V8 into 2 4 cyl motors sharing a crank.

Benefits, higher reving, stronger crank, more precise timing and a totally different noise.

Most cranks are cast then the throws are twisted through 90 degrees, they never go exactly. The journals will have enough metal on them to be machined at pretty much bang on 90 degrees but the counterweights will be out.

No george thats a flat boxer engine, if the V was removed and the cylinders 180 opposed then yes that woudl make them opposed.

Google says ferrari, lotus and TVR use it in their V8's

thats that sorted then. we need some decent technical talk, not the usual rsc cack about neons, n rubbish like that.
