Only noticed this strange new noise on my 19 the last couple of days...

When idling, if i rev the engine it sounds like something whirring (supercharger-like). Also, the same noise is made when accelerating through gears 1, 2 and 3. i dont notice it so much in 4th and 5th.

i thought it may be gearbox related, but if it does it whilst idling that rules the box out, right? Belts loose/tight perhaps? turbo?

Not your fuel pump? Can you tell where it's coming from?

if i had to guess, i'd say driver's side of the engine bay. but that is a guess as i am actually on that side in the car when i hear it Wink

regarding the turbo...is that an educated guess? my turbo packing up is it? Crying or Very sad

right then...

after collecting my new parts for the car, i decided it was high time i inspected this noise. Its not the turbo. i took the timing belt cover off and the belt seems to be going round consistently. the noise certainly seems to eminating from the fuel pump like simonds suggested...

...so what would be making this noise then?? Shocked

I also have this whirring, I heard on the vine they all seem to make this noise, and seems to come from the drivers side of the engine bay, at first i thought it could be one of the belts is too tight, like after a new cam belt.

I slackened it off just slightly and the noise did decrease, so then I thought, if they are down there maybe the big end bearings.

and thats where i stopped thinking about it, as engine out again, didn't take my fancy..lol

my car now boasts a new rear enigne mount and a new front passenger wheel bearing.

mount seems to have made a lot of difference but as for the bearing im not so sure. psychologically it seems to be a lot better Laughing but that always happens after replacing a part! besides, i cant really hear much over the sound of the fuel pump Laughing

brake caliper seems to have stopped leaking too *touch wood* so off to motor factors to get my money back on the morrow.

the guy i had the car off has a spare engine (that was out of my car originally) so i think i'll see if i can get it off of him and swap fuel pumps.
