Right, this happened to me 2-3 months ago.

Before I went to the anual inspection, I had a splitted alternator belt beneath the distribution one, which broke, at a speed of 100 Km/h (65mph). Instead of replacing the 3 or 4 knackered valves, I replaced the all set.

Now, before we (me and my mechanic) prime the valves on their seats and install them, we cleaned with sand paper on a driller, all the holes to the mixture in the head/body, ant then took it to the anual inspection.

The results (not much noticeable in the power) were an astonishing (never had less than 0,4 %) value of 0,05 %, with a knackered cat !!!

Since that cleaning, she's running beautifully and I'm the happiest man ever Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Therefore, I recomend if somehow one must remove the head, cleaning thoroughly is a MUST. Worked for my E7J-746, don't know about other engines
