When travelling at high speed in 4th gear and 5th gear my gearbox is spitting oil from somewhere..i can smell it first then when i look in the mirror its like a Bond smoke discharger.

I looked under my car and saw that gb oil was all over the underside of the car.

been doing it for a while.. When i looked at the box it appears to have come from the breather hole...may be wrong. oil is not overfilled.

There is also a very slight whine in fourth and fifth gear. The selections are smooth, no gear jumping etc.

On idle i can here the diff turning.

Box is a JC5 5053 fitted to my mk1 clio Hybrid.

any advice appreciated ..cheers

do you have a breathe ron it? theres 2 types, tube with mushroom on the top and a black box one.

you can't hear the diff turning as the cars not moving, the slight chatter you get is the input shaft turning on idle.

How much oil did you put in?

3 - 5 litres!

lol theres your problem.

Normally they take about 2.5 litres. The boxes don't hold much and are easily over filled, this causes your problems and can also make gearchanging difficult.

First off I'd check that the passenger side seal is seated correctly and that it's not caught, torn or perrished. If all is fine, jack the car up and clean up gearbox oil and then watch for leaking. If it's not leaking from anywhere then it's over filled so simply place something under the fill point to catch any oil spilling out and then remove the fill point bung. Walk away and leave it till nothing comes out the hole... this should then see the oil at the correct level.
