 Help me with this 16V problem...

My PH2 Renault 19 16V N reg is playing up. Everything is fantastic on the car apart from this one problem. I must add that it is left for long periods of time but after using it a lot the problem still doesn't go away.

Basically it starts ok, idles ok (most of the time) but when you drive it is VERY hesitant like the fuel cuts out and the whole car jerks about to the point where the gearbox mounts are shot because of it. It's undrivable at the moment. This hesitation occurs when you lightly press the accelerator but after some motorway driving it is fine on light acceleration but hesitates on full acceleration.

When I described this on the renault1916v forum someone suggested to change the lambda sensor and I did that because it was cheap but this hasn't cured it. A mobile mechanic plugged the car into a computer and it came out with a fault. This fault was extremely vague though and said something or other about the throttle. Do you think it's the throttle positioning sensor playing up?

I don't know what else it could be. As I said I have driven it a lot, filled it a few times with Optimax and put some cleaners through it to no avail.

If anyone can get hold of a throttle positioning sensor that would really help, because then I can try it out without paying renault for the part (i don't think they make patent parts).

TPS I would say. Unplug it and see what happens.

It will not rev freely etc as you have removed the primary input.

but unplug it and see what its like.

I agree with Chris, my car was exactly as you described when I bought it. Took it to Renault, they did a diagnostic check and found I had a faulty Throttle Position Sensor. Sensor was £79, whole job including diagnostic test & fitting etc was £117. Legend I thought, especially from a Renault dealer!

Haha, you have got my old car yes. No I didn't sell it because of that. I found another one, that I have now on ebay for £400! Got a flight up to Edinburgh bought the car off an impound (it was going to be crushed, as someone hadnt paid tax etc. for ages) and then drove it back down to london. It's all really good condition apart from this problem, the milage is low too.

So you reckon TPS? I didn't want to go to renault because it's £65 down the drain just to test it and they might not even find the fault. So I think I will go with it. Is it a pain to unplug? I will consult the haynes...

I will let you know how it goes.

Well didn't you notice this problem on ur old one? Or did the problem just start as soon as I drove it down the road Razz lol. If it's the same sorta thing as ur old one used to do then yeah, TPS is the problem. If that never happened with you in the old car, then I would still say TPS is ur problem cuz that's what it sounds like when u described it earlier. It's easy to unplug, just.....er.....unplug it! But I dunno can u just plug it back in or not. As long as you don't actually unscrew it and take it off the car then I think you can yeah. But if you unscrew it and take it off the car then it's gotta be setup properly when you put it back on, cuz the position you put it back on effects how it works. I'm not gonna pretend I know what I'm talking about here, so ur best waiting for one of the knowledgable people to confirm that for ya!

to be honest i hadnt used your car for a while because i had a driving job, so I hadnt noticed any problem like that.

i have a spare working one, still on the TB too, prolly best to have it complete with the TB as they are factory set but if u just want the TPS i think chris h has the meter readings to set it up on your TB.

Just replace the complete TB much easier and you do know the setup is oke! I had about the same problem mostly after changing gears up and putting the pedal down. I changed the TPS and after that's been changed all the problems solved, the idle was to high, it stuttered, etc.
