Got in a new hard drive from Sony today which they have kindly loaded with some proper bo high def footage.

It's absolutely awesome. The very reason that we sell Sony stuff is because they have the best picture quality on the market. I have seen the new spanky top of the range sony stuff running dvds but high def just puts it all to shame. It really is like looking through a window.

Just though I'd mention it as it absolutely blew me away when I saw it. Quite a freaky experience to be honest. If anyone gets a chance to go into a local sony centre do it it's well worth a look.

sony stuff is slickly designed and marketed, but very very poor reliability compared to say panasonic, in my experience.

At the end of the day reliability is based on anyones own experiences although the average age of sony sets we repair is 10-15 years old and panas tend to be a lot younger ie 5-10 years.

The reason we do sony is that in the 40 years that out company (my boss company) has been trading as an independant Sony have come out as reliably and quality the best that they have ever done. Having said that.....yes panasonic are their main rivals (I have a Panasnic set at home) and are one of the few companys that are in the same league as sony in terms of reliability performance and research.

I'm not back at work till Tuesday but I will get pics up then. Not that pictures will show anything near the quality of high def tho.

Not to mention Playstations/PS2s. Badly made, unreliable pieces of crap.

have to say my original playstation from 95/96 still works fine. occasionaly it won't load first time but its done that for a few years now.

I knwo others who have had to buy 3 or 4 of them and replace the laser assembly a dozen times right enough.

what happened on it neal?

They seem to fail in a lot of ways.

trantons won't store anything in its memeroy, turn it off its there if you turn it back on but leave it 10 mins its all reset.

Ambers no longer plays cd''s (just a year old now), the display only works half the time and it normally needs the face popped off a few times to get the radio working.

My grans won't play tapes and will lose all settigns evry few weeks.

Pioneer head units, never had any problem with them, i have used ones that have been in a box for 10 years and work straight away.

only if youre going to give it to me for free Razz

And anyway, i dont suppose this headunit has the input for it. Rolling Eyes

my Sony keeps switching off momentarily Chris

Like it's dodgy wiring, except the JVC is on the same wiring and is fine.

pop the face off and clean the contacts on it.

Ambers does it, the old NES cartridge blow on it trick usually works.

Tried all that, believe me!

Oh, and as for the original playstations, I lost count of the number i fixed for mates and their mates.

People used to have to put them upside down in order to load. This was because Sony made the moving parts of the CD drive out of plastic. After several months of the lens going backwards and forwards along its plastic rails, they wore down. The laser/lens then sat squint to the CD and couldnt read it.

Still, a few pieces of cut up metal floppy disc flap glued in the relevant contact points within the CD drive sorted that.

Nice one Sony!
