 how to de-badge your grill

dont thimk this has been done before so heres my guide to de badging your phase2 front grill, done this today and took lots of pics:)

things youl need:

isopon p40 fibre glass
isopon p38 filler
sanding block or electric sander
coping saw
wire mesh
drill
dust mask

STEP 1: clean and remove badge and rubbers.

STEP 2: mark out the area you have to cut out with tape, 3.5 inches from the centre of the badge on each side and up to the bottom point of the badge hole, then using the coping saw carefully cut the piece out.

STEP 3: if u have a knob chop it off, then use a file to get rid of the rough edges

STEP 4: sand down the painted area around the hole cut out the drill holes evenly round the cut out for something the fibre glass can hold onto

STEP 5: cut out the wire mesh 10.5 inches by 4.5 and bend to shape

STEP 6: mix your p40 and cover the mesh and a couple of inches over the edge of the cut out on both sides making sure you press it in firmly to fill in all the holes, dont put too much on or youl be sanding forever, leave it to dry for 30mins then get sanding.

keep sanding untill u have it flat with no bumps, dents are ok, it should look like this now:

STEP 7: mix the p38 really well and using a very thin layer press firmly to fill in all the dents, leave dry for 30mins and sand down the best u can with very fine sand paper block untill it is dead smooth and u cant feel anything when u rub your hand down it.

when thats finished and its dead smooth and almost shiny, its ready for priming and painting , i dont reccomend aerosols because the paint chips very easily , so im taking it to the spray shop tomorrow to get done properly , finished pics next week Smile

I debadeged one of mine and i got a slight high spot on it too lol never got around to putting it on the car, it's still in my cupboard!

Nice work there Jim, how much did it cost to get it sprayed ?

o cost nowt had it done same time as my loverly new bonnet no rust Smile would have been about £40 otherwise

Looks like an excellent job, well done. I like the touch of drilling in location points around the cavity to give the fibreglass something to get hold on.

Of course, the ultimate question - what did you do for the mesh/slats behind this panel Very Happy



EDIT: Thorough job with a happy ending - maybe this article should be in the knowledge base
