whats the best, most accurate way to do this, without using the special renault tool thing?

Ive looked in the haynes manual and it goes on about using a spring balance to apply a force to the belt and measuring the deflection etc. All seems a bit mickey mouse to me, not to mention a right royal pain in the arse.

Normally id just use my standard "pretty tight, so you can just twist it to about 45 degrees if you really try", and err on the side of tighter, but these motors seem to be a bit fussy on the old cambelt, so best to do it properly...

Yeah the haynes manual states that you should be able to twist the belt round to 90 degrees but that seams pretty slack to me, I know that by rule of hand Chris will tighten the belt up to about 1/4 or 45 degree of movement...

ok... the "LOL" part makes me unsure of whether or not this is a serious suggestion Smile

thats 100% serious matey. ive not done a cambelt change yet, and ive done loads of em, where the belt has not whined. always a case of slacking the tension off a bit. and sometimes it whines all the time, due to a worn idler pulley, or dodgy new tensioners.

they all whine, doesn't matter if they are tight or not, when they start flapping and touching the cam cover though its bad

1/4 turn from the oil pump pully to the tensioner.

Also turn the exhaust cam backwards to get the slack out.

re check the tension after turn the crank over by hand a few times as it can loosen up again. r u using a bolt in the back of the head too to adjust tension...helps a lot and leave it in cos it can help prevent the belt goin slack if the tensioner nut ever works loose.

ive always just done it up until i can move the belt up and down between the cam pulleys about 3mm +/-....mine whines too..always thought it sounds a bit gay to be honest...bit too much like these modern little girly cars that are all whirr and no roar!!

this becoming a bit confusing, should it whine or not when at the proper tension?

Jonnyboy i have a bolt to put in there, and i shall leave it in there as you say.
