Hi...

Great site guys...well done.

Just bought a bog standard 1.4 e 19. Not exactly exotica I know!

I was just wondering what would cause it to idle eratically. It seems to idle between 600 - 1200.

Most of the time its ok and is settled at around 800 to 900 which I would guess it about right? But every now and then it seems to hunt up and down and it is very slightly aparent when driving at a constant speed on light throttle. It feels as if it were overfuelling or something.

Are these injection units prone to problems or is it more likely to be something like an airflow sensor or lamda probe.

It isn´t a huge problem as the dealer I bought it from has promised to fix it before I pick it up...but it would be nice to have some ideas cos you know what these dealers can be like!

Anyway...thanks for the help in advance.

Gareth

By the way...any of the 16v Renaults out here are super rare and are worth a fortune! I paid roughly 1500 quid for my 1.4 1993 and that was cheap!!

its the E7J engine i believe

i know a dodgy cooloant temp sensor causes idle mania on these cars which you might need to change but this sounds more like the carburetor needs cleaning to my limited knowledge .
plus you might find out u need to change the air filter and the spark plugs if they have not been changed for a long time.

Thanks guys,

We´ll see what the guys at the garage diagnose.

I did think of the Lambda probe and so did Jonnyboy when I rang him... so lets see.

Thanks for the offer of the Chamade but the steering wheel is on the wrong side! Laughing

Again thanks guys

would you adam and eve it!!

I picked up the r19 on wednesday and the fault is still there!

I asked him what they had done and he said that he didn´t know...he was just a salesman! Ta very much.

After my persistence he phoned the garage that dealt with it and he reckoned their mechanics drove it and couldn´t find any problem and he even says they put it onto the Renault diagnostics and that didn´t show a fault.

As soon as I start the car...the revs begin to wander...it is not possible to miss it!

But it goes back in today so let see. I bet he tells me they´ve had the " top tech man in europe " on it and he can´t see a problem. Evil or Very Mad

gareth

although on a more positive note: i drove it to helsinki and back and it managed 6.5 litres to 100 km...which is great as my last van was 16.5 litres to 100km! ( i guess thats around 45 to the gallon? )

I think i preferred the 67 mpg!

I have just got the car back and the guy says that they changed the " idle motor " .

Maybe I am missing something? Shocked

I asked him to show me the " idle motor " and he said: " dont ask me I am just a salesman ". Deja vu?

They have done something as the idle is steady now but the misfire on throttle is still there. Evil or Very Mad

Maybe I will have to take you up on that offer Jon! I don´t think I will bother with these dumb bastards!

But I like the car anyway! I think that oil level meter is a wizard idea!

idle motor is a little valve that bypasses the throttle, controlled by the ECU to open and close to keep idle at a steady speed...sometimes cleaning these out if they are sticking helps.

if they changed that then you must have had a very hefty bill. Did you not ask to be shown the bit they replaced and the old one?
