Chris whats the chance of the K7M lump sump surviving a cam belt snap without damaging the valves

Quite unlikely it would have survived... its an interferance type engine... your best of going to a breakers and buying a second hand engine for about £200... buy a genuine timing belt from Reno.. fit it when out of the car, lot less hassle.



Then just drop the new engine in place of the old.


You will need

gearbox oil
engine oil
oil filter
possibly some engine flush

not much, but then again it depends when it happened.

I snapped the white 19's camblet when my finger got trapped in the water pump. I am glad the belt was old! My finger severly bruised belt snapped around idle but it came through unscathed.

But on my blue 1 the belt walked off the crank at 3krpm and bent 5 valves.

I'd just swap the valves, nice and easy job. Whilst the head is off may as well get it ported too fo extra grunt.

Don't need to use a genuince ren belt, lot of money for a ren item but the same is cheaper at GSF or even cheaper for an FAI belt from a factors etc. Avoid halfords.

OW how the fk did u get ur finger in there? and how did that manage to break the cambelt on not ur pinky? now i know ur proud of ur big hands but still!

it was my right index finger that got dragged in.

I was out trying to clean the pulleys, engine was runnign and the water pump one ont he energy lump is conical, I was usign a rag and not the paper towel I usualy use, it got caught and dragged me finger through.

The camblet was old and oily. It was getting changed the same day anyway. But the oil and age had weakened it so when my finger went throguh I just lost a bit of skin and had a black finger dor a while.

george and Stu thought it was hilarious when I told them.

Well i t happened on the motorway. Was doing about 70. Sudden loss of power. I am assuming it the cambelt but i am going to find out tonight.
When it died the Managment light came on followed by the temp light.

Looking at a diagram of the head the valves do seem quite recessed into the head.

Engine turns over. But seems really fast. No strange noises.

relly fast turn over says to me valves have hit the pistons and no compression.

Take the cam cover off, its dead easy, that will tell you for sure.

Yeah, all apart from the fact some tit had put 1. 10mm, 1. torx screw and 1. cross head screw in to hold it on, hand felt skinned by the time I'd got them all out!!

Just looking through the haynes manual and remebering some stuff from the dialogys. There is a picture of the piston from the k7m lump. From what i can see most of the face of the piston is actually ressesed. And the raised section lines up with a section on the head itself.

I hope to god this is right coz that would mean i wont have any bent valves and should be able to strap a new water pump on and cam belt and away we go. Correct?

well you might be lucky but tbh I reckon there be bent valves if the belts gone.

Well I should find out 2morrow when the rocker cover comes off. Im not getting my hopes up completely but There does look like a nice lower section on the pistons.

Took the rocker cover off. Looks like at least 2 bent valves
Was gonna take the head off as well. Now this is a total first for me.
Can you tell me what the head bolts heads actualy are and what size.
they look like an inverse torx bit. I didnt have a tool but intend to purchase one 2morrow so i can pull the head off.

Also am i gonna need to drain the oil just to take the head off.
Coolent is sort of draining itself as its pissing out of the water pump.

nooo oil can stay in...its all in the sump. but u need to drain the coolant. dunno if the headbolts are the same as f series but they are torx55...or they may be a allan key style....it should say in ur haynes?
