they are E12 headbolts, get the socket from halfords. They are male torx heads.

Coolant needs drained oil can stay, but change it afterwards anyway.

Chris. How the hell do you compress the valve springs.
This is all a first for me so im gonna be a pain and be asking questions like every 5 mins probably

I say hope coz i never done anything like this. Dont get me wrong im always stripping stuff down and reparing it. Just never done an engine before. Just hoping i havent bitten off more than i can chew. Already had one bloke say to just replace the engine coz he says it will have damaged the pistons and con rods

ignore the other bloke.

Engines are extremely simple devices, now a gearbox, thats a challenge.

Well head is off. Took about 2 hours with some bloody stupid bolts wich are dead hard to get to. Was gonna give in at one point. Well the one of the pistons crown has a slight mark on it where it came in contact with the valve. Valve must be bent by something like 1 degree. So next purhase will be the valve spring compressor. Next question i have is What do i use to remove the collets or is there a special tool for that too. And then of course there is the valve grinding. Can somene give me a crash course.

Will spend a night this week stripping the head down. And removing the old head gasket. It seems quite welded on to the head. What can i use to clean it off without damaging the head.

collets just pick em off. Theyt might just fall off. When you put them back in dip em in grease so they are held to the valve and don't fall off on you.

There will be more than 1 bent valve. I had 3 bent valves when the cambelt went on the 1.4e around 3krpm with no load on the engine.

Best way to checkis upturn the head leave the plugs in then pour water into the combustion chambers, none should leak away. There may be some due to poor valve seat sealing but there really shouldn't be a prob.

Valve grindings easy, smear the paste on the valve head where it matches the seat sucker on the valve head then grind to and fro. Don't buy a drill operated one as it kills the guides.

As for the gasket spray it with wd-40, let it soak then use a scraper on it

Meant to ask chris. One thing i am worried/hear alot about is the head being warped. What do i need to look for and how much of a bitch is it.

get a straight edge, like a flat steel rule (its a rule not a ruler, a rule is a measuring device a ruler is like the Queen), sit it on its edge then look for light under the edge of it, check with a feeler gauge if you see any.

TBH if you took the head off when it was cold and undone the bolts evenly chances are its not warped, I have not yet seen a warped energy head that I have taken off.

How many valves are actually bent? I suspect 5 of them from that pic

well the cam is still in in that pic so half the vlaves will stick anyway....its when u take the cam out and they still keep sticking out u go ...eeeeek!

to get round that you simple take out 3 13mm bolts and remove the rocker shaft JB

Theres been contact with 3 exhuasts and 1 inlet thats easy to see.

no the cam and rockers are still in in those pics. Just looking at the valve heads I can see 4 that have made contact with the pistons.

I believe there are 5 Rocker shaft bolts....

you are indeed correct DrHex, there are 2 types, the gold solid bolts and the black hollow bolts. I am a muppet.
