this is interesting. I'm always dodging the 5W-40 when i do a oil and filter change. I've tried 15w-40 and 10w-40. Didn't make much difference, tapped my hell cold start. Head gasket said bye bye so I replaced the whole cylinder head which stopped it Wink although i have noticed it tap several times for about 3seconds on an ice cold morning. It does sound like the bottom end is abit chattery in the morning aswell and abit when it's hot although I never give the car anything over 3.5K rpm until the oil temp at least moves past 40*c.

If you can let us know if the 5w-40 makes any difference Laine that would be great mate

5 40 does make a difference at cold start or at least it does in mine, less tappy. but either way all the oils people have mentioned are fine for the F engines so its each to their own imo.

Yes my tappets are still tapping Sad

Didnt really make that much difference. Put some Wynns hydraulic valve lifter treatment in. as well as chaning the oil to 5W-40.

Many it takes couple of hundred miles to work in?

Although it only takes about 10 - 20 seconds for the tapping to get "better", maybe i havent got enough oil in? Its upto just under the "max" on the dial in the car. Dipstick is the same.

Maybe i just have borked tappets? Razz

Also failing all of this you can get new tappets on ebay for £75, how easy are they to fit? I take it its not just a case of popping the rocker cover off, taking old ones out and putting new ones in?

pretty much yes....although you need to get the camshafts out, which means timing belt etc...

oil level has nothing to do with it....only if it goes so low the pickup actually has no oil to pick up! but you'd know about that.

Personally I think it's well out of order to sell a car knowing that there is a potentially critical problem with the engine that needs attention and not tell the buyer.

I would never do that, but that's just me, I know there are a lot of unscrupulous people around.

I don't think KS is one of those people though, and even if he was, he'd be rumbled quite quickly after shouting from the rooftops on all the forums that the car had an oil pressure problem before selling it Laughing

I sold it back to the owner, and i am purchasing one of his other cars, so everyone is happy. He can replace the pump and get the problem sorted, which i have been informed he is doing.
