A mate has just brought his 1.4 megane (1998) round and the exhaust is blowing a bit. You can see some photos HERE. As you can see the mesh type bit seems to have frayed an the exhaust is blowing and pretty loose around that area.

Basically what I'm wanting to know is if the whole centre section will need replaced or is there any way this other bit can be patched up?

Thanks.l

right way is whole new section.

The better way is exhaust place and get them to weld a new bit in, they can get new mesh bits to weld in but I'd go for a solid pipe.

the megane exhaust system is pure pish as you have discovered.

tbh I'm not sure how much he paid. He got it from a garage and got a years warranty or so on it but I'm guessing the exhaust won't be covered as it will be a wear and tear part. When he actually got it the engine seized within a day of buying it but it tiurned out when they serviced it they hadn't put enough oil in so he got a new engine put in on only 32,000 miles. It's a 1998 RN.

Just tried a few places on the phone for prices for a whole centre section and they seem to have flanges on the end of the exhaust where as this one doesn't have a flange as such, just a round piece for the join. How much would a garage charge to weld in a new solid piece do you reckon?

thanks.

20 quid or so to weld it in.

new renaults you need to cut and sleeve the original system to fit new parts.

find out how much he paid please.

whats the score with your 1.4?

my 1.4 is just sitting outside just now as I haven't got it insured as I kept expecting to have the 16v going - but that just doesn't seem to be happening. I'm considering just re-insuring the 1.4 just now as I'm just having to use my old mans car.

I'll be directing my mate here later to see what you've said so he can reply about the price if I've not found out by then. Why do you want to know anyway? You got one your planning on selling?

yeah the green one. We are gonan take on Emmas laguna or might sell the lag instead dunno, up to Amber.

Get the 1.4 going, you shoudl have sold the thing then you would have had to get the 16V sorted.

Just been told he paid a grand for his. Only paid that though because of the warranty, head gasket had just been done, timing belt just done and it had just been serviced etc. I've not really looked at their prices but I would have thought a good few would sell at that sort of price as even clios can reach that sort of price and they are all a bit older than the meg.

hmmm

know anyone looking for a green 96 P plate RXE megane, all the toys apart from A/C, fogs etc as standard, alloys to, it also has 16B front brake upgrade.

Belts just been done but will be done again as the headgasket needs to be done (leaks oil fromt eh front).

About 105k miles I think.

afraid not mate. I'll let you know if I find anyone though.

Btw, when you said above that you have to cut and sleeve the original system what exactly do you mean? I take it you mean that in relation to the exhausts all having flanges?

Also, where the join is from the centre section to rear does that usually need cut or can you often manage to get it out by wedging the two pieces apart?

the system is in 2 peces from the factory, the downpipe and cat to the flanged bit ont eh middle which is 1 piece all the way through.

If its not one piece and theres a U clamp on the exhaust for the backbox its been changed.

Also why take it off, go down get it welded on the car.

if you take it off you will nto get it back on easily.
