Hi guys, I'm having a real problem getting into 1st and 2nd gear. Just got the clutch replaced - still the same problem. Garage adjusted the selector rods - slight difference but not a great deal. Mr Clutch says change the box. Any ideas??

Adjustment of the clutch cable perhaps?

adjustment is automatic.

did this problem only occur after the clutch change?

Always had the problem since I bought the car. Its just got worst over the last 2 months. The clutch change made it slightly better but did not solve the problem

Chris is correct in saying that the rachets are automatically adjusting but it is possible for some muppets to put the main rachet part way through the cams pulling arch (It's located in a very tight place where gravity forces the blood to your head and makes you feel all giddy whicih is why some people don't like to stay in the required position for too long as they start having logical ideas as their Brain recieves oxygenated blood and it scares them) which will result in reduced movement so it needs to be set correctly.

I'd say check the movement at the clutch arm itself first to make sure it's within tollerence. I can't remember the exact distance the arm is required to travel on the 1.6 Megane without consulting a Haynes manual but from memory, on the 2.0 it's about 19-23mm. I assume you know how a clutch and it's pressure plate works on a car so i'll not teach you to suck eggs but if the pedal pressure isn't moving the clutch arm the required minimum distance then it won't be engaging the pressure plate fully and thus won't allow you select gears! If the arm is out of tollerence then the clutch rachet/cable setup is most likely at fault by either incorrect cable routing or an incorrectly setup rachet. If it is moving within the specified distance but you're still having selection issues then it's most likely to be either the clutch plate or the internals at fault.

How confident are you in this garage as most are more than capable of dazzling you with bullshit and charging you for the honour?

Mick
