righty, my big monitor died last night.

put another monitor on it.

starts up all as normal says windows scrolls the wee bar at the bottom, then the login admin/other user page is up twice and then opens up so its in 2 parts.

i.e.2 full screens that are tiny.

thing is its normal up until the welcome to windows screen. wiggling the plug has little effect and if you turn the monitor off and it won't come baqck on, just a black screen

sounds like the monitor for sure yeah?

on my mums laptop using wireless connection, ohh fancy

Could be your graphics drivers chris....try logging in in safe mode (hold F8 on startup) and have a mess with the settings?

I got another monitor off of free serve and its the same until when the windows welcome thing comes up the monitor simply says out of range then goes off.

So its not the monitor.

i was thinking graphics card.

ATI radeon 7500 63 mb, SDR Vers A

Looking at the local place I can get an

ATI Radeon 7000 64mb for £23

Or

ASUS 9200 Radeon 128 mb AGP for £32

or

ATI Radeon 9250 128 mb AGP for £35

do I get another card or will it be the settigns somewhere?

If I was you id go for the 9200 @ £32 but if you could take a pic of inside your PC would be good. Sounds like ure current card is a PCI and not AGP so ure system might not even have an AGP slot. Ive got a 9200 lying about you can have for much less than £32 too.

Out of range means that the graphics card is set up to output a refresh rate/resolution higher than the monitor is capable of. Which isnt suprising since you had a big monitor on there before. If you'd have hit f8 on the Xp startup and gone in to VGA Mode all would have been fine. Changing graphics cards just reset things the same way vga mode would have.

well after the event thats very helpfull isn't it.

End of the day its got twice the ram on it so should be better on a bigger screen again.

Also hitting F8 meant driving 10 miles back to the flat then seeing what woudl happen then driving 10 miles back to my mum to get back on the pc so the other option was the better one.

this is all caused by the later monitors not being able to cope with the refresh rate used on the one that died, chris..

try safe mode and right click desktop, pick properties and then hit the "settings" tab and change the resolution to something lowish, say 1024x768 for starters.. then click the advanced button and hit the monitor tab.. change the refresh rate to 60hz.. restart the computer and see if everything is ok.. if so, change resolution and refresh rate to whatever you like/monitor copes with...

edit: oh bugger, problems already fixed i realize.. silly me Smile

Or F8 > VGA Mode . Does exactly the same thing.
