Thanks for the offer though fella. I don't reckon it's drivable down the M4 tbh. I'll get the driveshafts done local, and take it from there I guess.

Right, I had all that lot done last week and took it for another test today. Failed again! To say I ain't happy is an understatement but there we go.

This time it was:

1) Steering rack damaged and unservicable.

2) Offside front subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded.

3) Parking brake leaver has no reverse travel.

4) (Offside rear chassis holed) parking brake mechanism/associated mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded.

Now this means new rack and welding I guess. But is it worth it? I like the car but it driving me fooking bonkers! lol

I couldnt get one from the garage that did the MOT and I don't know if I want to go back to the one that did all the previous work as he said it would sail through the MOT, which clearly it wouldn't.

a quote wouyld have given you a general idea.

why is ther rack unserviceable ? does it leak or have lots of play?

Handbrake is common and easy fix.

Rust is always hard to tell though.

you need to get a few quotes and have a think about it.

Your close to a few members on the forum though which may help with the brakes etc.

that takes the piss surely the MOT tester should have picked up the faults listed on the second MOT the first time round. sounds dodgy.

its not like the faults were not detectable the first time round

Fucking MOT testers... got to take this Clio for its MOT tomorrow. I've done a fair few little things on it, in it and under it and I've been over it with a fine-toothed comb so I know there's nothing wrong with it. Only thing I can't tell about is emissions. If they fail it on anything else I'll know whether it's bullshit... and kick off if it is.

main problem is the tester has to use his discrection.

its a real issue on old cars. Take a tirumph herald down for a test, theres a lot of play in bits by modern standards

i remomeberr I had the same fail on a king pin, needs replaced, it was fine and packed with grease. Went home sanded it down and painted it and it passed!

ok, I've been told it'll cost about £100 for the welding. Good or Bad?

Also been told it'll cost about £250 as the whole rack needs to be replaced! Looks like I'm out for a second hand one or something cos there's no way I'm paying that.

the nearside track rod end is worn. The fail sheet says the steering rack is damaged and unservicable and the garage I went to said that the rack would need replacing.

When I got the car a few years ago I was told the rack was not in good condition and would need changing so I suppose it needs to be done if I'm going to keep it.
