Hello, havve scrapped the R21.

Need help with the Espace Chris. What would make it idle too fast when hot?

I noticed a leak / crack in the exhaust manifold and welded it up. Since then the thing will not idle less than 1500 RPM.

Any ideas?

probably messed with the lambda sensor you did ,that causes idleing problems when hot me thinks

Right found it, under the manifold. Replace this then?

I had heard that fast idle = too much air intake.

i believe its at the same place on the escapes , shall be a screwy bit with a cable sticking out ,and its on the cat pipe ,between the cat and the flange

wot (I mean what really) dan said.

But make sure the throttle plate is closing properly. give it a clean out.

But I would say no coolant temp reference.

Unplug the sender see if that drops the idle.

Now you mention it Chris, the temp seems to be 5-10% higher. Dont tell me head gasket, my head would pop.

A confession I have to make is I swapped the air box from the R21 to the Espace before I scrapped it as the Espace has had a head gasket go in the past and the coolant had rusted the wing nut and bolt on the top.

Also I swapped over the aluminium Renault Injection housing on top of the butterfly, well bcos it was easier than cleaning it.

Does this help?

I havent had a chance to do anything Today as her indoors had to go shopping for decorating stuff. Done 100 miles in it Today and it seems to idle faster the warmer it gets.

Thanks to the poters who replied, you lot are gr8.

Guys if you know where the ICV and CTS are it would be appreciated.

Fanbloodytastic, they are not disimilar.

I have stripped the 21 so have all the bit to swap and change, gr8 info.

Which one 1st or trial and error??

i would not suggest to swap the CTS ,just buy a new one for 8-9quid

about the ICV ,it usually just needs cleaning with some carb cleaner or wd40 to get the crap out of the turning bit .

the CTS on my espace is on the lefthand side of engine near the thermostat housing. got my new CTS from gsf for 17.50p

Sorry guys but I am not gonna pod out £17.50 for a new until I have tried the one from the R21. I value your opinion but I have a spare.

A CTS is normally a liquid filled device that expands when warm, bit like a thermometer, come variable mechanical rheostat. If the one in situ is not working then the best option is put on the spare. If it has the same problem then surely it is something else.

why not just disconnect the plug from the CTS and see if it makes any difference first before the swap ??

Can do, when they were called TSU's, temp sender units they went into the coolant /water jacket. I do not see the problem of using the spare. I know they now have four connecters instead of one but why not use the one off the R21?

You guys know more than I do but please explain.

as long as its the same CTS you can use the one of the 21 of course but the thing with the CTS is they do get knackard due to running inside hot water all the time , even before swapping the CTS s you might even take the one out and give it a good clean with some sanding paper .

temperature sender unit/sensor is another thing though and got nothing to do with the CTS , tsu sends the coolant temperature to your temp gauge on the instrument panel while CTS sends the info to your ECU Wink

gsf it costs 11 quid, I buy them often!

Anyway there are tech articles on the TB and ICV cleaning in the knowledge base!

when you swapped over the injection cap did you make sure it was flat and no air leaks?

Although the fact the speed raises as it heats up basically tells me your not getting any sort of idle control from temp change, the speed goes up because the oil thins but the fuelign stays the same.

Didnt buy a new one though, bit naughty but still worked.
