after driving it home for 35 miles and parking it in my drive the chammy has never been started up as i am more concerned with the state of the interior lately .
but i also want to make sure the engine is good enough to put this car on road before i put the interior back together ,otherwise i might as well break the car rather than trying to get it into a mint condition .

on the way home on that 35 mile trip ,i noticed a few things that may give you some clues of the engine condition.

-the temp gauge did not go over the second line the whole trip and stayed betwen the 1st and second ,which seem to be a bit cold .

-while stopping at the lights ,the revs were going up 1500 and down 900-1000rpm constantly

-i filled the water tank to the max before the trip and after the engine cooled down ,the water level seems to have gone over the max (saying that the car is parked facing about a 10degrees uphill)

so while i have the time (a couple months ) before i want to get the car mot ed and taxed ,i want to check and fix as much as i can with the engine/running gear but do not have a clue where and what to start with .

or would it be better to have some sort of diagnosis/compression etc tests to help figure out the condition of the engine ????

ideas please ,cheers

which line do you call the 2nd line? The 2nd line as we refer to it is the one where the fan kicks in.

Knackered lambda sensor, but with some driving it may clear itself up a bit and the effects will be reduced.

Mine does the same, air locks my boy, oh you have months of hassle ahead of you, I need to bleed mine every trip.

But you will need new belt, tensioners etc.

id just change all the consumables anyway so u know where u r with it...ie in the cooling system, drain it, flush it loads in all directions as poss, fit new thermostat, new rad switch, fil up with nice proper coolant (by that i mean not just water)

as for airlocks, i guess u either get lucky or not, i have never suffered from them.

and if drivin it doesnt clear the revs, change the lambda

you made me do this Laughing

here is the temp gauge
the first line is the red one and the second is blue

so the fan kicks in at blue line ,thats what confused me .my 1.8 rts fan kicks iin at the third line .

airlock would be annoying , i suppose a good pressure wash through any hole in connection with the cooling system would help . i mean taking the thermostat ,CTS etc out and giving pressurised water through the holes before i put antifreeze in there.

can the electrical connections at the lambda sensor be causing the trouble if they are corroded etc??? i will have a look and see whats happening .

hopefully will have a working battery coming soon so that i can check the electrics in the car .

and will have to sort the gear linkage adjustment sometime . i am still a bit unsure how to do it even though i read it 1000 times on haynes

the blue line is the 1st line and where the temp should sit. The fan come sin at the black line which is the second line.

Chances are the thermostat is missing or failed in the open position, get a new one.
