Need Help Changing Alternator....

Hello,

Can anyone help me?

I need to change the alternator on my R19 16V (ph2), can anyone give me a guide to doing it or any tips and tricks to make it go as smoothly as possible. I've had a look and haven't got an idea where to start?

need 16mm, 10mm and 13mm bits

remove the alt belt, then loosen off the tensioner, then remove the 16mm nuts and bolts that hold the alt on, then remove the side brackety thing from the inlet manifold, you need to loosen the power steerign pumps top 2 bolts so you can slide the plate out, then the alts free.

Some will say remove the headlight but if you do actually get the headlight out without smashing it, the removal doesn't really help in swappign the alt.

Whats the easist way to get the alt belt off? slide it off the power steering pully?

is the tensioner the 'L' shape bracket thing?

yep the l shaped thingy.

you need to undo the 13mm nuts on the bracket then wind in the tensionign screw, you also need to loosen the lower alt bracket 16mm bolt so the alt actually moves.

THne just slide it off the water pump pulley, the smooth one.

I found takin out the headlight helped with access a bit.

If I were to take the headlight out whats sort of job is it?

4 10mm nuts that never come off so smash the headlight in then you can break the plastic.

Or remove the bumper again no doubt breakign somehting as they rust right up then lever the headlight with a screwdriver then you can undpo the nuts.

mine came off without any hint that they might ever get stuck... as always with these cars, luck of the draw it would seem.

weather condictions may have something to do with it as well I suppose.

Up here I have only ever managed to just unscrew a headlight, that was on a ph1 in the scrappy with a new headlight!

Up here the weathers worse and theres more salt etc used on the road.

There is also more trouble with hinge pins up here, again more rain dribbling onto them I suppose.

Just a quick note to say thanks for the info.

I changed the alternator last week, and most things went OK, the only problem I had was one of the power steering bolts, the one behind the pullie. In the end I had to bend a spanner to get on to it!

PS, I didn't remove the headlight, but I did remove the black plastic cover, to give a little extra room.

funny...the garage that did mine yrs ago said they had to bend a spanner...

well I just used the open end of the spanner and it does the job. the cranked spanners you buy are cranked enough to get it.
