am I alone in thinkign the current crop of cars is a poor one?

Nothing really gets the old blood going and makes me think I gotta have that!

Only cars I would consider would prob be

M3 CSL
330d
Fabia TDI
Octavia TDI
Bora TDI
RS6

Noithing else really catches your attention, cars in the 80's etc always do though.

Cossie, 19 16V ph1's, Astra GTE's even!

what about the 5? The clios a better car and the 5's are really over rated.

Was flicking through PGTI the other day, some guy with a GTT stuck a 16V lump in and said this is what they shoudl have done all along.

GTT lump is a boat anchor at thre end of the day, when it came out in the 60's it was good.

so what if big numbers can be made from it that matters not if its not nice to drive.

I don't like the 5's to drive really.

But progress isliek that I suppose, a 1litre corsa could outhandle my 19 these days.

I was only joking, the 5 was ok at the time but it was only ever a small car for the masses.

Only modern car i would seriously look at getting is a Focus RS. Absolutely gorgeous cars IMO, with the performance to match. Not very common either, which i like.

Civic Type R - People all think theyre so ace, and sure they are fast, made well and handle nicely etc, but theyre just so predictable for a 20something trendyite who has just got his first reasonably paid job to drive. Totally lacking in character, the sheep's choice.

well if ur going to own one of them, i dont think fuel economy will be a deciding factor.
Your buying it for the power output, the aggresive looks and handling, not for comfort and getting 50mpg out of it.

you want good fuel economy get a 1litre corsa lol.

No Huw I suppose not, I think I was gettign confused with the issue of outright grip and of course comparing a fresh cars suspension items to that of a soggy 13 year old cars!

But tbh all new cars handle very well compared to those of 10 years ago even. Advances in tyre technology etc of course are a major part of this.

If I was to buy a new car it would have to be a diesel or a decent performing petrol engine.

Also if it was petrol it would have to be NA and of large capacity. Or turbo and biggish (3litre+ turbo). As turbo cars are fun but they are really not that great for day to day driving.

Take a 320bhp evo/scoob, 2 litre engines, take a 3.2 litre na 320bhp engine, the na lump will be faster everytime and will be far easier to drive and won't have issues like the others would.

I have to say I wouldn't touch the focus RS, its just fundamentally flawed in many ways. I think tbh the better car would be the ST170 to live with and an average driver would probably cover more ground quicker in the 170.

BMW, they make great cars, that cannot be argued against, the pedigree is there as is the fact if you have driven one you will agree its very good to drive.

The engines etc have copme a long way, and I love the look of th em3, but tbh I would probably pick the 330d over the m3. Why? Well the issue of things breakign isn't there, the M3 is not the most reliable car they have made lately!

It will drink petrol as well.

The diesel can be tuned to go just as quick and of course economy suffers greatly but if you look at it in the way that raggign the diesel you get the same economy as the M3 on an urban cycle you can live with that!

Then you have the VAG group, again theres a few issues with reliability again, but the cars are generally put together well and whats an air flow meter every 3 years, however the dual mass flywheel failures are less inspiring.

Easily tuned and the skodas are excellent value but cracking cars.

The diesel option of 60mpg+ suits me just fine tbh!

That leaves the audi, again large capacity petrol engine, this time in V8 form with 4wd. Its a lovely car to look at and as Lomond Audi are over the back I see/hear them quite often. Ally chassis, so corrosion isn't to much of an issue, although a bump will cause major problems as 99% of bodyshops etc will not repair a bent ally framed car!

Was quite keen of the Focus ST170, the best looking modern 'hot-hatch' imho, but not a lot of people know this but the Focus TDCI is of the order of 1-2 seconds quicker 50-70mph! it may only be 115bhp but the torque of a diesel wins any day. Loses out badly on 0-60 of course but 50-70 is more usefull every day.

I think it will deffo be a diesel for me next, quite like the idea of the Leon Cupra with the 150bhp diesel.

VW TDI's tbh are not all that great, they are however very popular which works massively in their favour.

There are far better engines out there, perkins where gettign more outputs in the 80's than vw get the now. The old passat diesel engine from 91 or something is still there best output engine.

mmm 5.7 comadore/ monaro developed by hsv same as a mustang but better pedigree mmm, bit contraversial mate I would have to disagree. imo holden far superior but I fear this could lead to a ford vs holden argument Laughing any aussies out there Laughing
