 New Clutch Cable - Fitting Procedure?

Hey Guys,

Well Liams Valver snapped its clutch cable last night in the middle of fecking nowhere (like they do). It snapped pedal end. Liam managed to limp home in 2nd for 2 miles, poor fella!

Whats the procedure for fitting a clutch cable? No where is going to sell us one on a bank holiday. I'm only asking because my haynes manual has gone walk about in my last year of non-r19 ownership!

I've fitted a new pedal before and that was a laugh-a-minute - not looking forward to that job, I'll be cancelling my swear box for that day or I'll be broke for the rest of the year!

It's an interesting job but with the aid of Coffee and Swearing it's not too bad.

REMOVAL:

Remove the heat sheild from the bulk head for access to cable.

Push the plastic retaining clip from the pedal end back and through the bulkhead/floor. (Some people say attach some string to it to aid finding the hole when fitting the new cable but i've never had a problem here)

Remove the cable from the clutch arm

Note the exact route of cable and then remove old unit from the car.

REFITTING:

Thread new clutch cable through exact route of previous cable.

Thread pedal end through bulk head (The most interesting part of the job and also the most likely to make you encounter a total sense of humour failure)

Make sure the retaining clip is correctly located and thread the cable thourgh the little "eye" on the back of the cable before threading it around the rachet and seating it in the rachet itself!

Go to the gearbox end and pull the cable over the clutch arm.

IF the rachet is adjusting correctly at the pedal you should have 10-15mm of free cable to play with. If you have way more then the rachet hasn't adjusted so you'll need to fiddle about with it in the foot wellby separating the rachet, pushing it back and then releasing it... basically you reset the rachet yourself.

Appologies for the poor "How To" but explaining things is hard for me.

Cheers Mike, just wanted a rough idea what I was doing rather then going in blind.

Btw did we establish what size a rear hub nut was on this forum?

Yeah i'm sure chris said it was 30mm and some other crap cars used 32mm Razz If i am correct Wink

use the string unless you have the hands of a 5 year old.

i use speaker wire to pull new cable through as it usually snaps when im in a car park somewhere

i leave it off gear box end get it all in ratchet then push to its upper much position for slack then a friend pops it on the gear box

technically halfords where open on the bank holiday and carry one in stock in every store Smile i knows as i had to do it in the car park once 45 mins start to finish longest time was blagging down somefiesta kids to put it on gear box end some fucking swearing though is to be expected
