just noticed yesterday that there is a funny screeching noise coming from the car especially when trying to accelerate in any gear .pulled over and opened the bonnet ,it sounds like the drive belt .
what could be happening ,any suggestions ?

its slipping, which is unusual for a serpentine belt.

But it may be a knackered bearing in something. Water pump, alt, ps pump etc.

See how loose the belt is and if its not loose take the belt off and spin the alt, water pump, ps pump by hand, they should rotate silently and easily.

both, you need to loosen the alt lock nuts then you can wind the tensione rin/out.

inspected the drive belt today the noise is still there .in haynes it says drive belts need adjusting after a while on these cars . even though the belt was looking tight ,i could easily tighten the tensioner bolt about 10 turns and still is willing to tighten more .
by the way i discovered the belt is going around/turning 4 different wheels ,alternator ,water pump, power steering pump and the crank bit that turns all the stuff if i am right???

still cant dare to get the belt out cause i am not sure how i will be able to fit the new one in as there doesnot seem to be a lot of working space there .does the car need lifting up ?? or is it a just stick the new belt in and tighten the nuts jobby????

after getting the belt out lets say i found the water pump is ferked or alternator or the steering pump . and i dont have a spare in the shed plus the knowledge to stick the spare one in .
my most important question is , how long can i drive this way without replacing anything ,would the belt snap or is it damaging anything else out there at the moment ?

its easy and the necxt time you start it you could wreck the engine or it may be fine for a million miles. Its easy to swap as is the water pump etc.

the belt has arrived finally today ,got it from gsf and took the old one out fit the new one in .
very easy job it was, after taking the belt out i turned the pulleys by hand ,alternator is the smoothest ,but all the rest tuens with no problems no noise .
the new belt made the same sort of noise for a bit(not as much as the old one) ,but did not have the time to try it on the road yet .is it going to get used to its place and cut the noise .do i need to adjust the new belt after a while???
