My oil level gauge stopped working a few days ago. I got it outta the engine, found that the wire inside it was broken and therefore I got a new one. Stuck that back in and the needle still doesn't rise more than a couple of milimeters. (travels the same without the gauge plugged in)
what makes what gauge work? How does it work? What do i do to make it work...?
Any advice will be deeply appreciated

Mine works some times, some times not. Real pain to get at the sender because of all the A.C. bits on the car.

I`ve got scars from changing the oil fillter. Managed to fiddle around with the connector, no change, would like to no how the bugger works before getting more scars trying to change the sender.

I like every thing to work on my car.

So any thoughts would be most appreciated

Have you checked the sensor?

Unless i'm mistaken, the oil level sensor and temperature sensor are the same unit in one and located at the front of the block.

It's a 1991 valver. F7P700 I guess.
It does have oil in it and the sensor has been changed.

The sender is a Renault 77 00 830 972 49€.

Looks quite long.

Does it have a float thing in it or some sort of oil resistance thing. (Must be resistance anyway)

Can you clean it.

What tells it to indicate oll level and then drop.

I think I will get a new sender and try to fit it when I find the time. Very busy at the mo. Have to learn about NITROX which is basically air with more oxygen in it, it’s become fashionable to dive with.

With two radiators and the Electric PS in the way it’s not going to be easy to get the sender out. So I deffo need a new one to shove back in I think..

it has a very thin wire goin through it.
in the old one, this was broken. got a second hand one, with the wire intact. got this one in and nothing happened.
before i got it in it spent 30mins in some gas so i guess it's quite clean.

Unfortunatly i know it's 49euros... Smile

"What tells it to indicate oll level and then drop. " that i don`t know bun would like to find out!

thanks R1916s (&everyone else)

once the engine is running, that is when it stops being a oil level and becomes and oil pressure.

sounds like dodgey wiring tbh.

does it behave as an oil pressure level when the engine is running?

Yeah, sure...
But it's not the same sensor. The one that measures the level is in the fron of the block and the preassure one is right under the exhaust mainfold...

i know this!

but both use the same needle, so if both functions weren't working one could look at the needle/dash as a potential problem area.

but this isnt the case, so if the wiring going into the sensor looks ok, i guess only other option would be to try or even borrow a brand new one...depending on how friendly you are with suppliers, maybe you can buy one and if it doesnt solve the problem, they will allow you to bring it back for a refund.
