hi. i have a 1999 clio(CBOA) with the D7f engine. my question and its one u will probably hear a lot is, is there anything else i can do to the engine to improve the performance other than the usual (filter and exhaust). If all else fails what engine(s) could be transplanted into my car. any help would be appreciated, thanks.

In my personal opinion, its really not worth tuning a 1.2

Not being funny, but i know how gutless those engines are, as i get driven into work every other week in a D7F powered clio.

You can transplant any engine that is normally found in a clio into your car, but you will of course also need to change the brakes, suspension as well.

The answer, as always, is it will be cheaper and easier to just sell the car and buy a bigger engined one.

Also if you put a different engine in it, the insurance will be higher than if you just buy another one with that engine in it as standard.

thnx for ur reply but unfortunately selling the car is not an option as i have just spent a fortune on the bodywork. am i right in saying that i would have to stick to my shape of clio engines or can i fit later engines or earlier ones?

well the clio is the current crop really so you have a wide range of choice for engines to pick from.

But think about it. I dunno how old you are but I assume your young. The clio cost what, lets say 3 grand, bodywork, that always sounds dear so lets say £1500, then an engine conversion with everything getting uprated to the engines spec £1500.

Thats roughly 6 grand, you could have had a cossie sapphire for that and insured it, even at 17.

its all good and well saying bout how much its gonna cost but i want to be different, i am keeping the car for a long time as its basically my pride and joy and looks very different frm evry other modded clio. I work in the mtr trade so labour costs and parts costs is not an issue but what is, is what is the best engine for the job.

a 182 engine may be the best from a bad bunch but theres far superior engiens out there if labour and parts are no issue.

thing is i want more performance but i dont want kill myself so i think a 2.0 is out of the question, i was thinking about a 1.6 rsi or a r5gtt as they are ore powerfull than what i ahve now nd hopefully arnt gonna send me to an early grave lol

Chris. Shame! What else am I going to go pick off other than small engined N/A hatchbacks that look as though they have 200bhp in my 19 16v.

Mark I am not having a go am just joking. I see why you want to make your car stand out even if I don't fully agree with the why especially when its only packing 60 horses in a heavy car? Hence your upgrade plans. Must admit i'm with Chris on the insurance issue. A young 19 yr old collegue has managed to put his car insurance on an older R reg 1.2 clio by adding a full bodykit higher than if he were to have insured a Williams. Also the Williams looks better and is more exclusive being that all small engined clio's seem to have a huge bodykit. He however is picked out as an obvious target and is blown away by white van man. The point is he bought the 1.2 for insurance reasons.

Maybe a 1.6 would be a good compromise if you are set on keeping it.

1.6, much better option.

Although tbh the 1.2 16V engine is actually rather good, if it gets ported well etc then its very good.

thing is i actually work for reanault but they wont entertain me as its ''if its not standard we dont want to know'' hence the parts bit aint a problem so am guessing at getting the 1.2 16v engine, g/box and ECU and loom then put it into my car using the 16v mounts (after its been ported of course)

aye, but if a 1.4 lump comes get that if ye want.

Terh 1.2's good but the 1.4 has the capacity benefit and it still retains the lower tax bracket

Im only 17, ive got myself a 172, only passed my test less than a month ago, aslong as you dont take stupid risks you'll be fine![/b]

40 year old lump in a new car.

The engines shite as well, people blah blah on abotu them but its crap.

the crossflow turbo version is far superior even then its still using pushrods!

No point in tryign to make an old crap lump do decent things when theres plenty of better engines about.

no tthe best not tyhe worst either, although sticking the water pump on the heads probably the most stupid move ever.

Prioject Y has the same lump.

thought that was a strong runner..

its either ren 11 turbo or clio valver

both have the pros and cons.

but i see a ren 11 with more potential
